Amazon.com essential video Jingoism, beefcake, military hardware, and a Giorgio Moroder rock score reign supreme over taste and logic in this Tony Scott film about a maverick trainee pilot (Tom Cruise) who can't follow the rules at a Navy aviation training facility. The dogfight sequences between American and Soviet jets at the end are absolutely mechanical, though audiences loved it at the time. The love story between Cruise's character and that of Kelly McGillis is like flipping through pages of advertising in a glossy magazine. This designer action movie from 1986 would be all the more appalling were it not for the canny casting of good actors in dumb parts. Standouts include Anthony Edwards--who makes a nice impression as Cruise's average-Joe pal--and the relatively unknown Meg Ryan in a small but memorable appearance. --Tom Keogh

Attention on Deck!!! March 18, 2010 T. Hunt (Springfield, Illinois) The blu-ray TOP GUN is like watching a whole new movie. Sure the picture is much better, but THE SOUND makes this work. I have a 7.1 dolby surround sound system which is 7 speakers plus a sub-woofer (8 total) and the 6.1 soundtrack lights up all the speakers. During the intial carrier scenes I felt like I was on deck landing the planes. It was a great experience.
Throughout the movie I noticed more details than the standard dvd. It is not necessary to have a great sound system to experience the improvements made to the blu ray edition, but it sure makes for one heck of an overall experience.
chopped off heads March 10, 2010 Julie A. Chaves (USA) DONT BUY IT, great blu ray quality. but it zooomed up and u will see the screen with some chopped off forheads and background. It'll tick u off... even with amazon cheap prices.... u will be man. Wait til they re-make the blu ray disk. DONT BUY THIS BLU RAY.

My product was received very quickly and was in terrific shape. I am very happy with my purchase.
Too bad they did such a cheap job with the Blu-ray edition February 19, 2010 K. SWENSON (Boston MA US) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Sure, the sound is great ... but that is no excuse for simply re-hashing the DVD video: its still a cropped version of what was on the big screen. Too bad.
