This animated feature-length life of Jesus boasts a stellar pedigree. Originally a BBC: Wales production, it showcases the voices of some of Britain's finest actors in any medium: Ralph Fiennes as a brooding and humble Jesus, Miranda Richardson as Mary Magdalene, Richard E. Grant as John the Baptist, and David Thewlis as Judas. The lovely, flute-heavy score is by Oscar winner Anne Dudley (The Full Monty). And clearly a lot of expense has gone into the Claymation-like animation. But while it's hard to find fault with the rendering of this familiar story--it's respectful and definitely done, you might say, by the Book--it would have been nice if there had been a tad more joy, if it walked a bit lighter in its sandals. As it is, all the characters seem consistently subdued, whether they're expressing angst, rage, terror, or bliss--none of which is helped by the figures' blank-eyed stares (if animators are becoming ever more sophisticated, why can't they get rid of those creepy Charlie McCarthy gazes once and for all?). Still, the weight of having such formidable actors play these familiar roles lends the production a certain credibility, and parents looking for good religious videos that won't insult their kids' intelligence will be thrilled. --Anne Hurley

This dvd is strictly for children. It is not however the Christian reply to Prince of Egypt. A mixture of cartoon and clay animation it is in earnest at best but fails to be anything more than picture book gospel for those who are five years old and under.
It is told through the witness of the daughter of Jarius - who is given a name here, but in fact had no name mentioned in the gospel. Nor did she witness anything this child's story shows.
Growing up Catholic I can remember my mother deeply trying to impress on me and my siblings the wondrous miracles and great suffering of Jesus. Ignorant and innocent as we were - she some how gave us at least a partial understanding of the hope of Heaven for those who accept Jesus, and the horrors of Hell - for those who reject Him. This movie fails badly in this. I seriously doubt any child watching this can grasp why Jesus had to suffer, die, and rise from the dead. But I suppose such is best left up to the parents to teach.

I loved it! My 6 year old and 3 year old actually selected this DVD over watching cartoons in the morning. I intend to purchase several copies of the movie and distribute to nieces and nephews in their Easter baskets. Also, the bonus feature on the making of the movie is fantastic. It really gives you a deeper appreciation for the art of clay-animation and all the talented and dedicated people involved in the making of this outstanding project.

It might be just claymation and animation, but The Miracle Maker portrays Jesus in a way that few "Jesus movies" ever succeed at doing: as a real, authentic person like you and me. Many, Many movies show Jesus as some unrelatable mystic who teaches people as someone who is decidedly separate from them-- and that's not who Jesus was at all! Told from the different perspective of Jairus and his daughter, it's just a beautiful story. This movie is a work of love - the artwork and effort that went into it say it all. It's my favorite movie of this type, and the extra features in the Special Edition make it a great value.

This is my favorite movie about Jesus. It's told simply and elegantly. There is some artistic license taken by the filmmakers but over all it's pretty true to the biblical story. If you want a moving and uplifting introduction to Jesus and his life, this is a good place to start. My daughter and I have enjoyed it many times over the years. What's So Amazing About Grace?

This is my favorite film depicting the life of jesus. great for adults to enjoy too! i highly recommend it and have purchased it for several friends' children. A different approach and some great humor too.
