"The book was better" has been the complaint of many a reader since the invention of movies. Frank Darabont's second adaptation of a Stephen King prison drama (The Shawshank Redemption was the first) is a very faithful adaptation of King's serial novel. In the middle of the Depression, Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) runs death row at Cold Mountain Penitentiary. Into this dreary world walks a mammoth prisoner, John Coffey (Michael Duncan) who, very slowly, reveals a special gift that will change the men working and dying (in the electric chair, masterfully and grippingly staged) on the mile . As with King's book, Darabont takes plenty of time to show us Edgecomb's world before delving into John Coffey's mystery. With Darabont's superior storytelling abilities, his touch for perfect casting, and a leisurely 188-minute running time, his movie brings to life nearly every character and scene from the novel. Darabont even improves the novel's two endings, creating a more emotionally satisfying experience. The running time may try patience, but those who want a story, as opposed to quick-fix entertainment, will be rewarded by this finely tailored tale. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars One of the most moving films ever   January 30, 2010

This movie is exceptional both in terms of a moving story line as well as the performance of the actors. I strongly recommend this DVD for anyone who enjoys good movies.

4 out of 5 stars Took the Plunge   January 24, 2010

Stephen King movies tend to be really good or really bad. Usually the longer they are, the less they deliver. This film is a little long, but worth every minute in terms of characterization & plot. On another level, I tend to filter out Tom Hanks films (I couldn't get myself to watch DA VINCI CODE until a month ago. A lot of hype for paltry reiteration of "truths" well known & blatant imitation of JFK style. Tom Hanks looking out of it for most of the movie.) Anyway, THE GREEN MILE quickly overcame my little foibles with a very satisfying story & intelligent action & script. Excellent direction too. The horror element is slightly subdued--and that's a good thing too, particulary if you're tired of the horror-of-the-obvious genre. The racial overtones were handled with sensitivity.

I'm glad I took the plunge & watched THE GREEN MILE.

    5 out of 5 stars The Green Mile (Blu-ray Book) [Blu-ray]   January 10, 2010

Green Mile is one of the greatest movies and if anyone there didnt watch this buy it now. The version on blu ray is great so the picture and also the sound, if you have nice equipment at home (TV, blu ray player and hi fi system) then go ahead, dont wait with buying. Im from europe and i got this movie fast, in like 2weeks so its fantastic and it was no damages, nothing, same as bought in store. So +5 for amazon and also +5 for movie.
