Amazon.com essential video Before Harrison Ford assumed the mantle of playing Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan hero in Patriot Games, Alec Baldwin took a swing at the character in this John McTiernan film and hit one to the fence. If less instantly sympathetic than Ford, Baldwin is in some respects more interesting and nuanced as Ryan, and drawing comparisons between both actors' performances can make for some interesting postmovie discussion. That aside, The Hunt for Red October stands alone as a uniquely exciting adventure with a fantastic costar: Sean Connery as a Russian nuclear submarine captain attempting to defect to the West on his ship. Ryan must figure out his true motives for approaching the U.S. McTiernan (Predator, Die Hard) made an exceptionally handsome movie here with action sequences that really do take one's breath away. --Tom Keogh

Great movie - Best version yet January 21, 2010 Billie K. Fuller (Hervey Bay, QLD, Australia) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I first saw The Hunt for Red October as a VHS rental on a 26" TV in 1990 and had to own it. When it was released on DVD in mid 2001 I bought it and watched it on a high def 32" TV with surround sound and appreciated it much more. When it was released on HD DVD I wasn't quick enough before the discs were withdrawn from sale due to faulty packaging and I was very disappointed. Needless to say I like this movie.
I have just watched it on Blu-ray on a 50" plasma with audio pumped out through a Yamaha amp and big speakers. The video was superb. The audio was better. It enveloped me in a seamless surround field and truly made me feel as if I was in the centre of the action.
If you haven't got a Blu-ray player buy one just for this movie. You won't be sorry.
"Next time, Jack, write a goddamn memo." Blu Ray Review January 19, 2010 A. Scultore (NY) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Most likely the greatest submarine movie ever made! Crimson Tide is the only thing that comes close. Based on the Tom Clancy novel and set during the Cold War, it tells of a story that the U.S. and Russia claim never happened. The action is intense and the story is rich. The one issue you could have are some of the Russian accents, or lack of (Sean Connery). You will be thrilled and completely engaged by this movie. A MUST SEE!
NOW FOR MY BLU-RAY THOUGHTS: The special features are carried over from the special edition DVD. The transfer is beautiful! The underwater sub battles never looked better, but there are some minor flaws where lights appear at the top and/or bottom of the screen (blue line). Considering how old the movie is, the good far out weighs these minor flaws that only appear twice for a second. The sound is good but not up to par for blu-ray. FINAL VERDICT: The picture is just to beautiful on Blu-Ray to ignore, UPGRADE WORTHY!
BLU RAY VERSION January 15, 2010 AVID MOVIE WATCHER (USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
BLU-RAY VERSION IS WORTH BUYING. I DON'T NEED TO TELL YOU ABOUT THE MOVIE, OTHERS ALREADY HAVE. BUT, NOT TOO MANY PEOPLE TELL YOU IF IT IS WORTH UPGRADING FROM YOUR REGULAR DVD TO BLU-RAY. THIS ONE IS WORTH IT. COLORS ARE STUNNING AND SOUNDS GREAT.
Tension beneath the sea January 14, 2010 Chrijeff (Scranton, PA) The first of the Jack Ryan films, taken from the first Tom Clancy Ryan technothriller (The Hunt for Red October (Jack Ryan)), is a winner from the start. Historian and free-lance intelligence analyst Ryan (Alec Baldwin), who's currently living in London, travels to CIA Headquarters to consult with an old friend, Adm. Greer (James Earl Jones) about some mysterious photos he's acquired of a new Russian nuclear sub. The "Red October," which boasts a secret new silent-running capability known as a "caterpillar drive," is captained by an ethnic Lithuanian, Marko Ramius (Sean Connery), whom Ryan soon begins to suspect is planning to defect, and take the sub and at least part of its complement with him. Unfortunately he can't prove it--and the Russians, who know it to be the truth, have turned out everything that can float to stop or destroy the fleeing sub. It's up to Jack to either convince the American authorities that the Russians are using them as cat's-paws, or get aboard the "October" and get the truth from Ramius himself. The tension ratchets up steadily to an almost unbearable peak as American and Russian navies alike quarter the North Atlantic, each trying to drive the "October" into range of the other. (Watch for Courtney B. Vance as Seaman Jones, a classical-music-loving sonar specialist aboard the sub that's actually the first to get a whiff of the "October"'s location.) Drenched in salt water and almost unequalled in pace, this may be the best (as it was the first) of the adaptations to film of best-selling author Clancy's thick, complex books.
The Hunt for Red October January 6, 2010 Arnita D. Brown (USA) The United States reacts with surprise, curiousity, and intrigue when the captain, and selected crew of a Soviet missile submarine announce their intention to defect. This movie has everything. High tension, great acting (Connery as Ramius is awesome), and very smartly developped military and political scheme that still makes you feel that all this could really have happened. The musical score is also perfect. I've seen this movie many times and I still enjoy it.
