Amazon.com essential video Here's how critic Roger Ebert described the unique and lasting value of George Lucas's 1973 box-office hit, American Graffiti: "[It's] not only a great movie but a brilliant work of historical fiction; no sociological treatise could duplicate the movie's success in remembering exactly how it was to be alive at that cultural instant." The time to which Ebert and the film refers is the summer of 1962, and American Graffiti captures the look, feel, and sound of that era by chronicling one memorable night in the lives of several young Californians on the cusp of adulthood. (In essence, Lucas was making a semiautobiographical tribute to his own days as a hot-rod cruiser, and the film's phenomenal success paved the way for Star Wars.) The action is propelled by the music of Wolfman Jack's rock & roll radio show--a soundtrack of pop hits that would become as popular as the film itself. As Lucas develops several character subplots, American Graffiti becomes a flawless time capsule of meticulously re-created memory, as authentic as a documentary and vividly realized through innovative use of cinematography and sound. The once-in-a-lifetime ensemble cast members inhabit their roles so fully that they don't seem like actors at all, comprising a who's who of performers--some of whom went on to stellar careers--including Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford, Cindy Williams, Mackenzie Phillips, Charles Martin Smith, Candy Clark, and Paul Le Mat. A true American classic, the film ranks No. 77 on the American Film Institute's list of all-time greatest American movies. --Jeff Shannon

The Age of fonzi February 1, 2010 Professor Joseph L. McCauley (Austria+Texas) This film and the Last Picture show capture the feeling of being a
teenager in the late 50's in the right way. And therein lies the difference between
us and the kids who grew up in Europe in the same era. Rock 'n Roll, drive-ins, and drag racing
vs. any notion of serious study. It was a blast, and not much nore.
An American Classic January 13, 2010 Zarathustra (Sacramento, CA USA) The year was 1962. The British Invasion, Rock and Roll and the horrors of Vietnam were just over the horizon. John Kennedy was still president. 1962 was the lull before the storm. American Graffiti brilliantly portrays that brief moment of innocence in American history.
This film kicked off George Lucas's directing career. Every viewing of the film is a revelation. I have seen it many times and have always thought of it as having been filmed in Modesto, Lucas's hometown, but as The Making of American Graffiti, the superb documentary included with this DVD reveals, it was actually filmed in Petaluma. Many acting careers began with this movie, including those of Richard Dreyfuss, Ronny Howard and Harrison Ford. American Graffiti set a precedent for wall to wall music in films, which was copied by many that followed. All the music was selected by Lucas. Be sure to get the soundtrack album, which is on two CDs.
This American classic is worth another viewing, but don't miss The Making of American Graffiti, which is the model for how bonus features should be made. It features interviews of the filmmakers and actors in the film and reveals Lucas's unorthodox casting and directing style. Many takes were filmed and Lucas often kept those where mistakes occurred.
American Graffiti December 19, 2009 A. Blaauw (near Atlanta GA) I remember this film very well and wanted a DVD of it. I wanted the digitally remastered copy, so I bought the DVD version. I was disappointed after viewing the DVD because it appears I bought a second-rate copy of it, or possibly a pirated copy. There are "skips" in several different scenes where if you were watching the VHS version, it appears as if a part was cut out, then the film was spliced back together. I really wanted a first-rate DVD copy of this film but that's not what I got.
I have purchased DVD's from different Amazon vendors in the past, but my satifaction record is mixed - some really great, others very blah.
Exactly how it was. September 12, 2009 Patricia Otten Our favorite movie depicting the time that we were teenagers. Cruising, the drive-in, all of it. Love it.
Back Into Time September 6, 2009 N. Bishop (Florida) American Graffiti If like me, you where into girls, cars and staying out on Saturday nights with your friends, this great movie will take you back to those glorious weekend nights of our youth
