Amazon.com There's a reason why Cindy Crawford was dubbed "Baby Gia" when she first hit the modeling scene. Indeed, Crawford, now the world's best-known supermodel, greatly resembled model Gia Carangi, who went from high school to the cover of British Vogue in less than two years. Carangi appeared on many more covers of Vogue (French, British, Italian, and American) and Cosmopolitan before dying of complications from AIDs (she was an IV heroin user) in 1986. Now most people recognize Carangi's name from this powerful HBO film that stars Golden Globe-winner Angelina Jolie, who comes by her talent honestly. Jolie is the daughter of veteran actor Jon Voight, and her own training as a model serves her well--she has the moves. Throughout, she's heartbreaking--as no doubt the real Carangi was--effective, and stunning. With good source material (Stephen Fried's A Thing of Beauty: The Tragedy of Supermodel Gia), Jolie's stunning performance, and strong directing by Michael Cristofer, the movie goes beyond the merely sensational. The script was cowritten by Cristofer and novelist Jay McInerney, whose Bright Lights, Big City covers similar territory. As a cautionary tale, Gia works. But to watch Jolie in her character's tragic self-destruction is utterly compelling. --N.F. Mendoza

Caught the 126 minute version of Gia by chance on an old vhs. June 23, 2009 JOHN GODFREY (Milwaukee ,WI USA) I wasn't even aware of a censored version until I went to this site. I was just browsing the old stacks & seeing an early Angelina Jolie effort my interest was piqued. I figured just another beautiful, junkie, dead movie. But she does a stand-out job in this rather lackluster cable tv movie. Gia was a talented, out-of-the box, gorgeous super model. She was also a tortured soul, uncertain of her sexual orientation, fabulously successful & rich too quick. She gets a taste of nose candy & is soon. is mainlining heroin. A few half-hearted attempts to kick the habit fail. Her fall is as spectacular as her rise as she gives up the only person she really loves for the drug. You'd figure if you didn't know the story that an OD would be her end. From using contaminated needles she becomes one of that first generation to contract AIDs. But we didn't know much about it in those days. Then there are the six minutes some full length scenes lingering of her in the all-together. Gratuitous? Tasteful? Dunno. I don't rush out to see Jolie movies, but this one is very dramatic, very good.

Angelina isn't Just a Pretty Face May 8, 2009 B. Melendez (Port Richey, FL USA)
I have to give this an "A" for the acting...especially Angelina. As for the movie's story...well...not so much impressed with that. Thought they used the story to show more "skin"...so to speak. Personally thought the story line was hyped..but I have "no" real insight into this sort of world. The acting was superb...just didn't care for the story so this didn't get a 5 star in my mind's eye.
Gia April 16, 2009 K. Bish (USA) I really like this movie , well actually i like anything that has Angelina Jolie in it.
angelina joie at her sexiest! April 9, 2009 Steve Enns (Montclair) This is hand down the very best (and sexiest) performance by Angelina Jolie. Even thought the life of Gia was very tragic, she does a great job of portraying her and her complicated life. You can't help but be inspired by her raw talent. Over the years Angelina has had many dramatic (and excellent) roies. However, none of them as as good as what she brought to this film.
