The films of Tim Burton shine through the muck like a jack-o-lantern on a foggy October night. After such successes as The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands, it should come as no surprise that Sleepy Hollow is a dazzling film, a delicious reworking of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Dark and moody, the film is a thrilling ride back to the turn of the 19th century. Johnny Depp stars as Ichabod Crane, a seemingly hapless constable from New York City who is sent to the small town of Sleepy Hollow to solve the mystery of the decapitations that are plaguing the town. Crane is a bumbling sort, with a tremendous faith in science over mysticism, and he comes up against town secrets, bewitching women, and a number of bodies missing heads. Christina Ricci, as beautiful as ever, is Katrina Van Tassel, the offbeat love interest who alternately charms and frightens Crane.

The film, while occasionally gory (as one should expect from a movie about a headless horseman), is not terribly frightening, although it is suspenseful. Both Depp and Ricci are convincing, and the art direction and production values give the village its harsh feel. Toward the end, once the secrets are revealed, the film does slow down; however, this stylistic horror film provides many tricks and even more treats. --Jenny Brown

    4 out of 5 stars A beautiful Film   July 4, 2009
    Pixikins (DFW)
From the costumes to the scenery, just a very eye pleasing beautiful movie. Walken alone is unnerving enough as the headless horseman to carry the whole movie creepiness level up to a 10 even if it is in the last part of the film.

    A joy to watch.

1 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS MOVIE! Hate the Blu Ray   May 6, 2009

Given that this is one of my absolute favs, I upgraded when the Blu Ray became available, only to my frustration. The video quality is very poor. Stick with the SD version.

    2 out of 5 stars About the Blu-Ray transfer   May 5, 2009

I think this is a wonderfully entertaining movie, so I just don't understand the negative reviews. However, this review is not about the movie, but about the particular transfer of the first US Blu-Ray edition. It is true, as other reviewers say, that it is grany, and it shouldn't...a BR should not have this grain, because it is not in the original movie, unlike other cases (e.g., "The godfather", where the grain is an essential part of the original look of the movies). Paramount did not bother to provide anything but the standard Dolby Digital and DTS sound, no improvement at all in the sound department, and there should have been. This said...hey, we're talking about high definition here. The level of detail is really much better than in any DVD edition (I compared it with my DVD in the same player). Backgrounds and CG shots are much more detailed, and the textures of clothes, furniture, and objects are much more realistic and alive. So, it still deserves a better treatment in Blu-Ray, but, for the time being, it is the best version you can watch, specially if you are tired of the pixels in your large TV set.

2 out of 5 stars No idea what movie other people here saw   April 27, 2009

This movie is really bad. Tim Burton is a lousy director and writer, but often brings some interesting visuals and ideas to a movie if he is controlled (usually by someone else writing the script).

He has made some great stuff: Batman, Big Fish, Sweeney Todd (Nightmare before Christmas was not directed by him)

He has made some awful stuff: Planet of the Apes, Batman Returns, and this movie.

The movie is spared a one star because of some cool looking sets and a great (non-speaking) performance by Christopher Walken. Everything else in the movie (maybe I'm forgetting something, Johnny Depp was ok, but well below his usual level) is pure garbage. I would strongly recommend spending your DVD dollar elsewhere.

I like this movie very much, I am a Tim Burton fan for years, that's the main reason why I bought it; but I must say that i was not impressed with this Blu-Ray vertion I got to say not the best DVD transfer out there these days.

Still I enjoy the movie very much!
