    Product Description
A VETERAN SECRET SEVICE AGENT HAUNTED BY HIS FAILURE TO PROTECT JOHN F. KENNEDY FROM ASSASSINATION GETS A CHANCE TO REDEEMHIMSELF THIRTY YEARS LATER, WHEN A BRILLIANT PSYCHOPATH THREATENS TO KILL THE CURRENT PRESIDENT.

    Amazon.com essential video
This smart, tautly directed thriller from Wolfgang Petersen is about the cat-and-mouse games between a Secret Service agent named Horrigan (Clint Eastwood) and the brilliant, psychopathic assassin (John Malkovich) who's itching to get the President in his cross hairs. The back-story--Horrigan is haunted by his inability to prevent John Kennedy's assassination (Eastwood is computer-generated into archival footage)--is more than a little hokey, but the plotting itself is smartly, even ingeniously, constructed. Petersen manages a viselike grip on the tension and Eastwood even gets to deliver an ever-more-timely lecture on the diminished nature of the office of President. Eastwood's as gruff and as infuriating to the by-the-book Powers That Be as ever, and Malkovich oozes delightful menace. Renee Russo capably costars as a colleague with whom Horrigan gets friendly. --David Kronke

4 out of 5 stars Solid thriller; Malcovich is excellent   January 30, 2010
    K. Swanson (Austin, TX United States)
    4.3 stars

Well written and directed, with good performances all around and a typically excellent Morricone score, Fire is stolen by Malcovich, easily one of the best actors of his generation. His bad guy here is perfection, with all the menace he needs yet enough humanity to make him believable. Clint is Clint, as ever, and Russo holds up her end. But it's Malcovich who makes this work.

The script is exemplary, the dialogue realistic, and in general this is an intelligent thriller that fires on all cylinders. Clint's selling of himself as a piano player falls a little flat; he's clearly not playing in the bar, but gets points from me for putting on Kind Of Blue when he comes home, and for his love of jazz in general. That whole angle felt a little forced, though. Aside from that, everything works well here; all political thrillers should be this tightly constructed, and have a script this smart, where the good guys can become bad guys in the blink of an eye. But hey, who really wants to admit that our secret service runs around the world killing people our corporations find bad for business?

Clint gets points for tackling yet another American myth, as in Unforgiven and so many other classics, while seeming to be the rah-rah patriot. Bright fellow, that Mr. Eastwood.

4 out of 5 stars "In the Line of ...",a sure-Fire winner!   January 9, 2010
    Robert Badgley (London,Ontario,Canada)
This retro review is for the special edition release of the 1993 film,"In the Line of Fire".This well directed suspense/thriller by Wolfgang Peterson shows a well cast movie and all with "game on".
The story involves one Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan(Eastwood)who is a "living legend",in his own tongue-in-cheek words. He is the only active and still working agent who ever lost a president on his watch(JFK);which has haunted him for years and continues to dog him with his peers.Enter one killer/psycho by the name of Mitch Leary who is hell bent on killing the president. He starngely knows Horrigan's background and throughout the movie plays a cat and mouse game with him and the rest of the secret service.Horrigan and his staff always seem to be a step behind the killer and as close as they sometimes come, they can never quite put their hands on him.
Leary slowly and methodically weaves his plan, letting no one get in the way and leaving no loose ends. For example, when he opens a phony bank account and the rep catches him in a lie about his background,he follows her home and coldly kills her because he might be able to i.d. him,and her roommate because she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
When Horrigan does finally obtain a lead in the form of fingerprints he is stone walled by none other than the CIA.Eventually it comes out to a much chagrined Horrigan, that Leary was an ex-CIA assasin who has now gone rogue. With this information the impetus to catch him steps up a few notches. All realize that Leary is VERY capable of doing exactly what he plans to do.It is during the president's campaigning in California that the noose tightens and the Secret Service finally get their man.Horrigan saves the president's life by taking the assasin's bullet.Trying to escape Leary uses Horrigan as a shield and they ride an elevator several floors where the big showdown occurs. The movie ends with Horrigan and love interest, fellow agent Lilly Raines(Rene Russo),sitting on the steps of the Lincoln memorial contemplating their future.
This movie got Malkovich an OSCAR and Golden Globe nomination,so memorable was his performance. He played the psycho to a tee;on the one hand very methodical and serious minded and on the other given to violent fits of rage. All this wrapped up in a character with no conscience who could kill in cold blood in an instant.
Eastwood gives one his best performances on screen. For all his critics who claim he is wooden and lacking range,I invite them to see this.Eastwood embues his character with a very natural and appealing quality, but one who has been haunted deeply by his past.He pulls it off brilliantly and effortlessly.
Technically the movie in this transfer is very good. The picture is quite clear and crisp in it's widescreen format and the sound is great in Dolby 5.1 or 2.0.There is a myriad of special features which include the trailer, talent files on the films director and three main stars, shorts on "Catching the Counterfeiters","How'd they do That?","The Ultimate Sacrifce:In the line of Fire", and an inside look at the real Secret Service. There is also a directors commentary and deleted scenes.
All in all a fine release of a fine and well done film.Eastwood the films hero and Malkovich his nemesis, play their parts with equal panache and a naturalness that makes for a more believable and enjoyable movie going experience throughout;excellent performances by both. The movie clocks in at around 127 minutes but it doesn't feel that long;one of my time worn but sure fire ways of telling me that I'm watching something better than run of the mill. This movie is a winner all the way.

5 out of 5 stars In the Line of Fire   October 18, 2009
    A. Chao (Okinawa, Japan)
I never have any problems when I buy from amazon directly I get all my stuff and in a timely maner. The supersavers shipping is great as well because for a few dollars more you can get another product instead of paying for SH&H. I live on a Marine Corp base in Japan and not only do they have a smaller selection then what I can find for dvd's especialy Blu-reys. They are so much cheaper here on amazon as well. This product was brand new and works great, plus an excelent movie with a great plot and acting. A must own for any Clint or Thriller fan.

3 out of 5 stars Eastwood Playing Eastwood   September 29, 2009
    John F. Rooney
"In the Line of Fire" (1993) is a fairly good thriller that will hold your interest. In his later movies Clint Eastwood seems to be specializing in playing older men who are out-of-shape, defying authority, trying to prove something to themselves and others, and who are flawed as people ( a guilt-ridden creaking geezer). In this outing he's a Secret Service agent who still feels guilty about being part of the Kennedy security detail that day in Dallas. Now, thirty years later, he's back in the presidential protective detail trying to trot alongside the limousine and barely making it.
The president's chief of staff hates him because he keeps calling wolf and getting in the way. He's in conflict with one of his fellow agents. He and Agent Rene Russo are bonding though. The Secret Service boss (actor John Mahoney, he of Frazier fame) backs him until there are screw-ups.
An assassin (John Malkovich) is gunning for the Prez and keeping in contact with Eastwood, teasing and taunting him with his schemes. He's one mean psychopath.
I saw the movie previously and remembered it as well-done, but this time it came off rather half-baked and didn't wow me as it had the first time. Perhaps like Eastwood I'm getting old and jaded. Like the movie stars of the old days, Eastwood always seems to be playing Eastwood no matter what name he goes by in the script.

5 out of 5 stars This film has it all! A true five-star classic   September 6, 2009
Roger J. Buffington (Huntington Beach, CA United States)
This is a superb film in which Clint Eastwood is perfectly cast as the (fictional) Secret Service agent who was closest to John F. Kennedy on the day of his assassination. Thirty years later Eastwood is nearing retirement, and has never lived down his failure to protect the President on that day. Now, a trained killer has announced his intention to take out the current President, and Eastwood is obsessed with preventing this, thereby expunging, or at least absolving himself, for his earlier failure.

This film really does have it all. Eastwood superbly carries off his assigned role. The rest of the cast is similarly excellent (Fred Thompson is great as the President's Chief of Staff.) The somewhat intricate story is put together carefully, and realistically, and this is done so clearly that the viewer never loses track of what is going on. Every scene contributes to the eventual climax of the film. No spoilers here. This film combines just the right combination of intrigue, character development, plot development, and action -- plenty of action. The storyline never drags and this film carries the viewer along to its conclusion brilliantly.

This was a perfect vehicle for Clint Eastwood to show off his considerable talent. Highly recommended. RJB.
