Amazon.com Earnest and well-meaning, this film also accumulates power as it goes along, despite its inability to generate any moral complexity. But then how complex can you get in a story about the Japanese imprisonment and mistreatment of an international group of women (including Glenn Close, Frances McDormand, and Julianna Margulies)? Written and directed by Bruce Beresford, it's based on a true story. Japanese brutality has been well chronicled before; the real story here is the way these women of different social and ethnic backgrounds achieve a sense of solidarity in the face of potentially deadly abuse. Strong performances and many uplifting and moving moments. --Marshall Fine

Inspirational March 6, 2010 SereneNight (California, USA) Paradise Road is the heartfelt drama of a group of European women (and several other nationalities as well), who are incarcerated in a Japanese Prison camp in Sumatra. The story started out a little slow for me, however once the characters are captured the true tale begins. I felt Glenn Close did an excellent job playing the doughty choir director. It was interesting to see how the women coped with captivity and the loss of their men and the cruelty of the Japanese. I was saddened to see the deaths of some of the stalwart crew. I was glad to see the poodle lived though!
This was a film worth seeing as these ladies were quite inspirational.
Paradise Road August 31, 2009 International traveler (Erie , PA) This is a true story, and reflects with great accuracy just how things were at the time.
As an ex-pat living in Singapore for many years, I knew several people who were inturned, as well as the snobbery of the 'Raj' society before the Japanese arrived. It is an excellent film, and not appreciated here in the U.S. as it should be.
Paradise Road, July 19, 2008 B. A. Morrison (NC) This is a movie I saw and loved so much that I bought a copy, after telling friends about it, and loaning it the inevitable happend........I never got it back. So I bought another copy and yes, it's that good. When I first started to watch the movie, I thought about a Town Called Alice, and the forced marches the Japenese made POW's do so many times. But this is a story of survival, hope, determation and a lot of joy and sadness along the way. YET, it is not a sad movie and no it's not a "chick flick"will it brings tears? I hope so, you should cry when you see man's inhumanity to man in any way shape or form. But it's not depressing. This is a movie that somehow slipped through the cracks when it should have blazened across the airways. The acting- phenominal from everyone, the story- a true one- Inspriartional- made me want to make my life better. I could only rate this five stars, it deserves at least 100 stars.
