Amazon.com Based on the memoirs of party-girl-turned-conservationist Kuki Gallman, I Dreamed of Africa never comes close to living up to its title; the mood is more prosaic travelogue than oneiric wonderment. After a car accident warns Kuki of her mortality, she resolves to grow up, a process that mysteriously involves marrying a man she barely knows and moving with him and her young son to the wilds of South Africa. There she learns new beau Paolo is less reliable than she thought, but also that the sun-baked plains and roaming beasts of Africa speak to her in a way the nightlife of Italy did not. (We learn of her blossoming humanity because she introduces herself to the servants; a probing study of interpersonal relationships this isn't.) Kim Basinger obviously feels connected to the role--she can stride across a room with a majestic self-righteousness that the film should have drawn upon more--but she's defeated by a script composed of repetitive vignettes that have no cumulative effect and a director (Hugh Hudson) who keeps the film's emotional impact curiously flat and diffuse except for the crass, manipulative moments every 20 minutes or so. Sure the photography's lovely, but really, how hard is it to get a nice shot of flamingoes at dawn? --Bruce Reid

Movie February 14, 2010 K. Allen (Cairns, Qld, AU) Excellent movie. Inspiring, touching & powerful. You can feel the passion Kuki & Paolo have for the land and for each other. Beautiful.
I Dreamed of Africa February 11, 2010 Arnita D. Brown (USA) Kuki, a divorced Italian socialite, changes her life after a serious car crash. She accepts a marriage proposal from Paolo Gallmann, a man she doesn't know well, and she moves to Kenya with him and her young son to start a cattle ranch. Challenges beset her, not the least of which is Paulo's love of danger and his leaving for days on end to hunt and fish with pals. She must face fierce storms, roving lions, venomous snakes, and murderous poachers, and she must find accommodation with a neighboring tribe. Her mother entreats her to return home. Can Kuki live her dream, tame Paolo, guide her son safely past the perils and errors of youth, and serve Africa. The acting by the whole cast is amazing, the scenery is gorgeous in this movie. The story is well constructed. This is a worthwhile movie, I truly enjoyed this movie.
Good moving, very moving. June 16, 2009 Denise Spanbauer (Minneapolis, MN) I purchased this movie at a recommendation from my sister. Not being a Kim Basinger fan, I must admit that this movie is by-far one of the best performances of her career (my opinion). It was a very good movie and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good drama.
I dreamed of Africa review May 24, 2009 Codrin Stefan Arsene (Chicago, Il. USA) The movie has an inspirational tone and it tells a good story. Kuki Gallmann is a model for those of us who love Africa. She succeeded despite having to pay a very high price. And she never gave up on her dream. She did not run after Kenya claimed the life of her husband and son. When watching the movie, I sincerely realized, one more time, how lucky I really am.
Moreover, the movie raises awareness with respect to some of the pressing current events and challenges the Kenyan state faces: violence, poaching and lack of personal safety.
