5 out of 5 stars A Quirky Take on Teenage Angst   April 17, 2006
    M. R. Estante (North America)
2 out of 3 found this review helpful

A secret 1990 classic comedy about the perils of being so different from everyone else. Dinky is the adopted daughter of two very normal parents. She often retreats to the river to take care of stray animals who she has rescued from time to time. Dinky is having a horrible time in school as the ultimate outcast who sits alone in the cafeteria while popular kids throw food at her. Feeling so alien and alone Dinky retreats inside and wishes someone could just understand her. When another town outcast announces she is returning to town, the infamous Roxy Carmichael, Dinky's dark cloud lifts and she sess hope. Somehow convinced Roxy is her real mother and coming to take her away, Dinky's mind goes further into a fantasy of escape to a better place. When the illusion spirals out of control ... Dinky is unable to notice that people do care for her ... her school counsellor, adoptive father, and the boy next door.

Dinky isn't the only one who is caught up in Roxy's legacy. Roxy's teenage ex-husband, now re-married with kids, has been lost in her memory for the past 15 years himself. He is looking to have one last glance from the eyes of the one left behind.

Melissa Etheridge's theme song "I will never be the same" captures the kind of message of a town embracing the one person they ran out years before, only to never get the chance to really see her (Roxy) again. Sometimes the past is all anyone can have of the person who ran away.

"I Will Never Be The Same"

So you walked with me for a while
    Bared your naked soul
And you told me of your plan
How you would never let them know
In the morning of the night
You cried a long lost child
And I tried on I tried to hold you
    But you were young
    And you were wild

But I, I will never be the same
Oh I, I will never be the same
    Caught in your eyes
    Lost in your name
I will never be the same

    Secrets of your life
    I never wanted for myself
But you guarded them like a lie
Placed up on the highest shelf
In the morning of the night
When I woke to find you gone
    I knew your distant devil
    Must be draggin' you along

But I, I will never be the same
Oh I, I will never be the same
    Caught in your eyes
    Lost in your name
I will never be the same

And you swore that you were bound for glory
And for wanting you had no shame
    But I loved you
    And then I lost you
And I will never be the same

But I, I will never be the same
Oh I, I will never be the same
    Caught in your eyes
    Lost in your name
I will never be the same

5 out of 5 stars the lost teen movie   August 16, 2002

My roommate likes this movie, but I love it. It's a teen movie that is better than all of John Hughes teen films combined. It stars Winona Ryder in the type of movie I love to see her in.

4 out of 5 stars WINONA RYDER IS MY FAVORITE MOVIE STAR   July 25, 2002

BACK IN THE EARLY 90's I WATCHED THIS MOVIE NUMEROUS TIMES. THERE IS A BIT OF RYDER'S CHARACTER (DINKY BOSSETTI) IN ALL OF US. I REALLY ENJOYED WINONA IN HER TEEN ROLES AND I ENJOY HER WORK NOW. ADOPTED AS AN INFANT DINKY BOSSETTI HAS LITTLE TO NOTHING IN COMMON WITH HER ADOPTIVE PARENTS. "WE JUST DON'T FIT." DINKY SAYS. SHE SECRETLY AWAITS THE HOMECOMING OF ROXY CARMICHAEL, WHO IS A LEGEND IN DINKY'S HOME TOWN OF CLYDE OHIO. SHE ALSO BELIEVES THAT ROXY CARMICHAEL IS HER REAL MOTHER AND THAT DENTON (JEFF DANIELS) IS HER REAL FATHER. WHILE BLEEDING INFORMATION OUT OF DENTON IT ALL SEEMS TO MAKE SENSE TO HER 15 YEAR OLD MIND. ONLY BECAUSE THATS WHAT SHE HOPES. "WELCOME HOME ROXY CARMICHAEL" HAS THIS MESSAGE.. DON'T BELIEVE WHAT YOU WANT TO BELIEVE JUST BECAUSE YOU THINK THE GRASS MAY BE GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE. WINONA RYDER BY THE WAY IS STELLAR IN THE LEAD ROLE. YOUR HEART IS IN HER HAND THE WHOLE TIME. WHEN I FIRST HEARD OF THIS MOVIE I THOUGHT THAT WINONA WAS ROXY CARMICHAEL AND SHE WOULD BE WELCOMED HOME BLAH, BLAH, BLAH. THE MOVIE TURNED OUT TO BE A VERY MEANINGFUL MOVIE TO ME. I'M SORRY MORE PEOPLE HAVEN'T SEEN IT. I GUESS IF A TEEN MOVIE DOESN'T HAVE JOHN HUGHES NAME IN THE CREDITS IT GETS IGNORED. RYDER'S CHARACTER FINDS OUT THAT SHE'S ALOT MORE THAN JUST PRETTY IN PINK.

4 out of 5 stars Dinky, my hero....   May 20, 2002

Its hard to star rate this. It's a film that doesn't explain itself - you either get it or you don't.
    Words that occur are:
Incomplete, quirky, beautiful. If you had a rough time at school (or are at this time) you'll easily find the nuggets in this film. Dinky is my hero!
