    Editorial Reviews:

The human beings are almost as interesting as the title character in this surprisingly subtle and engaging film about the cross-country adventures of a smart-mouthed parrot. As director John Roberts deploys the footage, the bird becomes a vivid personality; every quizzical twist of his head is oddly expressive. The people who interact with Paulie are a quirky and interesting bunch as well, and the casting is topnotch: Tony Shalhoub (The Siege) as a Russian immigrant janitor, Cheech Marin as an open-hearted mariachi musician, and Gena Rowlands as a widowed painter in a footloose Winnebago--all are vividly eccentric individuals, memorable in their own right. There are some tired swipes at the cold-blooded meanies of Big Science (beady-eyed researcher Bruce Davison has Paulie clapped in irons), but for the most part the film respects the complexity of everyone's motivations, and that's virtually unheard of in today's Hollywood, even in films supposedly designed for grownups. --David Chute

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!   May 7, 2009

Terrific movie with Tony Shalhoub before he became Mr. Monk. It has a little something for kids and adults alike.

4 out of 5 stars Paulie soars for audiences of children   March 5, 2009
    lain4ever (Los Angeles, CA)
Admittedly, "Paulie" is my favorite animal film of the 90s, for its smart and compassionate parrot character and its excellent cast.

A Russian immigrant janitor at a university finds a parrot stuck in a cage. However, this isn't an ordinary bird. Paulie is a talking bird who has had adventures with a little girl, an elderly woman, a mariachi performer, a two-timing robber. Now he's only left in the basement as a science experiment, with his wings clipped. If only he could meet the little girl he loves. Perhaps the janitor could give him a hand.

This is very much a fantasy tale, with a bird who lives more than 20 years, with a wide assortment of star actors. Gena Rowlands finds Paulie in a magic shop in New York, and takes Paulie on a fun trip around the country. Cheech Marin plays the warm-hearted mariachi performer who brings Paulie to sing with his parrots. Jay Mohr gives a splendid performance as Benny, the cheating crook.

This was also a big performance by the great Tony Shalhoub, known today for his hit series, "Monk." As Russian immigrant janitor, Misha Vilyenkov, Shalhoub goes above and beyond, freeing Paulie from his cage in a tear-jerking scene. Although the movie lingers a little too long in the stuffy laboratory basement, the final escape from the university makes for a dazzling scene with a flying parrot and many dogs and cats running around, among other things.

Yes, "Paulie" is more or less predictable, but the film does so many things right. The characters are memorable. Even though some parts are a little too comical, it remains pretty solid to the end. Kids will definitely like this more than that overrated movie with the two talking dogs and a talking cat.

    5 out of 5 stars my mother's favorite!   December 18, 2007

    5 out of 5 stars Paulie   July 13, 2007
    John Farr
Charming family feature directed by John Roberts benefits from a sly, funny script that helps the movie avoid a case of the cutes. Top-notch casting also helps, with Marin and Rowlands both stand-outs. Also credit Roberts and Mohr with making Paulie an unusually expressive parrot- an adorable character we can actually root for. Parents needn't squawk about "Paulie": the movie rewards kids and adults in equal measure.
