Don't listen to the critics, watch this movie. June 1, 2009 Cool Cat (Springfield, OR USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I personally get sick of these self righteous, full of themselves critics who think just because a film "isn't serious enough", "has no social commentary", and "not political enough" it sucks. Like the official critic reviews above, I beg to differ. I love low brow, I'll just get that off my chest, the only criteria a movie needs to meet in my opinion is did it do its job of entertaining me, even if production value is low and the acting was wooden but it provided hilarity then it did its job. "The Golden Child" isn't a second "Citizen Kane" nor does it try to be, if your looking for Oscar worthy script or performance, look elsewhere. This movie however is a funny, action filled, slam bam thank you mam, typical 80's fantasy where a child is born the new Dali Lama, the reincarnation of the Buddhist's equivalent of Jesus. He has come to save and heal the world, there are dark forces out to destroy him and Eddie Murphy plays the social worker who seeks to protect and deliver him to safety. I know not a original plot and yes it is kind of stupid (demon skeleton is outdated and the director seemed to have a fascination with oatmeal and blood yuck!), but stupid can be entertaining. Especially 80's stupid which is the best. If you want to be entertained you won't be let down by this movie, but if you expect another "English Patient" forget it look elsewhere.

Having seen this movie several times I wanted it for my DVD collection. I can't imagine anyone else playing this part but Eddie Murphy. Usually irreverent, he brings a respectfulness for eastern mysticism into a jaded western culture. His humour gives way to heroism in a likeable story of good versus evil.
They don't make movies like this anymore February 18, 2008 Greg Farrell 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There was a time when movies expected us to suspend our disbelief as they followed a hilarious plot without the burden of self-reference or irony. Eddy Murphy shines in this light and uninhibited search for the child who will save the world from its sins.
Funny, Funny, Funny January 22, 2008 Oldsmobabe (Maryland, U.S.A.) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I saw this movie for the first time when I was 9 years old. 21 years later, I still laugh when I watch it. It has so many classic lines in it. "Only a man whose heart is pure can wield the knife and only a man whose a** is narrow can fit down these stairs." Ya gotta love it. It's Eddie Murphy at his 80s best and it's hilarious. It's a very good timepiece as well....in the opening shots, they show random scenes in L.A. and premium gas is only 99 cents a gallon! LOL!
Eddie Murphy saves the Day November 18, 2007 JohnA37 (Brisbane, Australia) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When a child with magical powers is kidnapped in Tibet, a Los Angeles social worker Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) is destined to save the "chosen one" and defeat the demon Sardo Numspa (Charles Dance). Great role by Victor Wong as the beggar/Lama. Plenty of laughs, good action.
