Amazon.com A good old-fashioned thriller that wears its Alfred Hitchcock pedigree proudly on its sleeve, What Lies Beneath stars Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer as picture-perfect married couple Norman and Claire Spencer, who seem happy and content with a fabulous house, college-age daughter and still-active libidos. When said daughter heads off to college, Claire starts obsessing about her new neighbors, and becomes convinced that the moody husband killed the neurotic wife, and that the wife's ghost has a desperately important message for her. Yes, it's true, there is a ghost, and there is a message, but it has decidedly more personal--and life-threatening--implications for Claire and Norman. Suddenly, that car crash last year that Claire can barely remember and the circumstances surrounding it start falling into place, and Claire begins to realize Norman may have a secret. Director Robert Zemeckis loads the first half of What Lies Beneath with humorous cheap thrills (the suddenly ringing phone, etc.) that poke fun at Claire's dilemma while simultaneously making you tense beyond belief. Between each goofy thrill, though, is one true one that will make you jump out of your seat, including a bathtub that keeps filling itself. And all the while, Zemeckis subtly telegraphs the fissures in the Spencers' marriage, slowly revealing that all is not well between these two. Yes, it's a blatant Hitchcock homage to movies such as Rear Window and Suspicion, but it's sleekly made, entertaining and engrossing. Ford does his stoic thing well (and looks great doing it), and Diana Scarwid provides a refreshingly lighthearted turn as Claire's best pal, but it's pretty much Pfeiffer's movie all the way, and she carries the film on her not-so-fragile shoulders. And the third act is a suspense tour de force, complete with a breathtaking sequence featuring Pfeiffer and that menacing bathtub. In a time of obvious horror films, What Lies Beneath is an intelligent, fun thrill ride that will leave you breathless. --Mark Englehart

A Movie Title that could not fit better... June 8, 2009 Owl (Oregon, USA) The title of this movie blankets over the storyline, the plot, the terrifying twist, and the climax. Brilliant!!! I originally watched it simply for Ford and Pfeiffer, two of my favorite stars TOGETHER!!! Never in my wildest dreams did I think this movie would turn down such a dark, twisted evil path, leaving you breathless, gasping for air. Just when you think you've figured it out, another twist turns down this winding path, leaving you clamoring for more. Not until near the end, do you finally come up for air, escaping from WHAT LIES BENEATH. A Masterpiece. Michelle Pfeiffer should have won an Oscar for this dual role she played. It left chills down my spine. What a woman!
No one is perfect . . . not even your husband. April 21, 2009 Eric S. Kim (Southern California) I had the chance to watch this film back in 2000, when I was thirteen I think. And it's no surprise that I had trouble walking into dark rooms for a few days because of it. What Lies Beneath is one of the scariest films I've ever seen; the jump scenes actually work (there are some you don't even expect in the least). The minimal music also helps with the creepy atmosphere (except for the jump scenes, of course). The plot may be a bit thin, but it didn't matter to me when I was watching it. The ghost in this film was as scary as the ones in all of those Asian horror films. And it's good to see some adults in this sort of horror flick, instead of stupid teenagers who do nothing but whine and scream. Zemeckis, Pheiffer, and Ford have done an extraordinary job with this film. And I hope we get to see more horror films that have a silent atmosphere and have no annoying little kids whatsoever.
Indiana Jones Meets Catwoman... March 21, 2009 Bindy Sue Fronkuenschtein (under the rubble) Norman and Claire Spencer (Harrison Ford and Michelle Pheiffer) think that getting used to their college-bound daughter's absence will be the worst of their worries. Nope. Strange occurances begin almost immediately, causing Claire to grow increasingly terrified and suspicious. Are simple oddities (a door that opens itself, pictures jumping off tables, etc.) escalating into full-blown supernatural events, or is Claire just losing her mind? The tension builds slowly, while the mystery becomes more intriguing. Is there a ghost about? If so, what does this frightening spectre want? What is it trying to tell Claire? Norman believes that Claire is cracking up, until dark secrets are revealed that leave no doubt as to the mission of the relentless spirit. Ford and Pheiffer are great together, coming off as a married couple w/ lots of history. WHAT LIES BENEATH is suspenseful, eerie, and packed w/ surprises. Highly recommended...
Though not a masterpiece, a movie worth watching! March 12, 2009 L Gontzes (Athens, Greece) What Lies Beneath brings to the screen the story of a widow that remarried and settled in a nice country home in Vermont. Things become a little complicated when she begins to feel a strong sense of paranormal activity inside her house... The movie falls into the action/adventure/mystery/thriller/horror type of category. Michelle Pfeiffer, Harrison Ford, and most of the rest of the cast carry out their performances well. The plot, the setting, the dialogues, the music, and the special effects, are all good. In short, What Lies Beneath is a movie worth watching if you are in the mood for a decent thriller as it will surely provide for an evening's entertainment. 4 Stars
I want that part of my life back!! December 14, 2008 R. Pierce (Stockbridge, GA United States) 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
Quite possibly, the worst movie I've ever seen! I'm not sure what I can say that won't "give the plot away" but I wanted to slap some sense into our hero, who obviously has no survival instincts whatsoever. She did everything wrong--I am genuinely amazed she did not do the cliche "putting on high heeled shoes and walk downstairs into the basement" routine as with so many other "horror" flicks. OMG! This movie is predictable and good only if you want to turn it into a drinking game. Of my friends (and there are many) NONE of them can say they enjoyed this film! I'm sure that tastes are varied, but nothing astonishes me more than people actually enjoying this tripe. Really? Did you REALLY enjoy it? Come on, you're just trying to improve sales, is that it? Admit it... Anyway, I'm going back to pretending I've never seen this flick. Do yourself a favor: avoid it, so you won't have to put yourself into shock therapy and spend loads of money trying to forget you've seen it. (We're thinking of holding a support group.
