Amazon.com Solid entertainment from a new group of Disney animators. The story source is a Chinese fable about a young girl who disguises herself as a man to help her family and her country. When the Huns attack China, a call to arms goes out to every village, and Mulan's father, being the only man in the family, accepts the call. Mulan (voiced by Ming-Na Wen, sung by Lea Salonga) has just made a disastrous appearance at the Matchmaker and decides to challenge society's expectations (being a bride). She steals her father's conscription notice, cuts her hair, and impersonates a man to join the army. She goes to boot camp, learning to fit in with the other soldiers with some help from her sidekick, Mushu, a wise-cracking dragon (voiced by Eddie Murphy). She trains, and soon faces the Huns eye-to-eye to protect her Emperor. The film is gorgeous to look at, with a superior blend of classic and computer-generated animation. Directors Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook make the best of it: a battle in the snowy mountains is as thrilling as the best Hollywood action films. The menacing Huns are not cute but simple and bad. The wickedness is subtle, not disturbing. The film is not a full-fledged musical, as it has only five songs (the best, "Be a Man," is sung during boot camp). Eddie Murphy is an inspired choice for the comic-relief dragon, but his lines are not as clever as Robin Williams's in Aladdin. These are minor quibbles, though. The story is strong, and Mulan goes right to the top of Disney animated heroines; she has the right stuff. --Doug Thomas

Mulan from Disney May 30, 2009 John A. L. Awrence
Mulan is a great movie for young and old. It incorporates some cultural sensitivity about ancient China with humor. I enjoyed watching this video with a group of 12 year olds. It was a cross-generational hit!
Disney's Mulan May 6, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Disney got VERY lucky on this one, because this is an excellent movie. Mulan is a beautiful, clumsy girl who feels out-of-place and is often humiliated by her mistakes. When the chance comes to prove herself, to make her father proud, and to set things right for China, for grasps it and sets off, disguised as a man, to the Emperor's army to defeat the Huns. She goes through pain, humiliation, and trauma, but eventually she becomes a superb warrior. When she is injured, however, and they discover her secret, she is cast out, and feels worthless. Has Mulan truly destroyed any hopes of saving China and her family's honor? Of course not, as you know. This is a Disney movie, for crying out loud! These never end unhappy. But this movie is a perfect blend of humor, powerful music, great casting, just the right amount of darkness, and gorgeous animation. One of my favorite movies should be added to every Disney-lover's movie-shelf, because this movie is somehow deeper than the others. It goes deeper into the thought of, "Well, what if I really do fail?" A classic in the fullest, and including one of my most beloved Disney characters (the little, wise-cracking dragon, Mushu), Mulan is a movie that will continue to be watched for generations to come. And as a final point, I know this review sounded awfully fluffed-up, but I truly mean it. Most likely, you will love this movie. Or, at least, you will like to watch it every once in a while.
Good Disney Movie May 1, 2009 Elizabeth Bennet (Ann Arbor, MI) Although this movie is not as good as some of its predecessors (such as the Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, etc.) it is still very enjoyable.
