Amazon.com essential video One of the best romantic comedies of the 1990s, My Best Friend's Wedding not only gave Julia Roberts a delightful vehicle for her crowd-pleasing comeback, but it further distinguished itself by avoiding the conventional plotting of the genre. Julia plays a prominent Chicago restaurant critic whose best friend (Dermot Mulroney) is a former lover from her college days with whom she'd made a binding pact: if neither of them were married by the age of 28, they'd marry each other. Just when they're about to reach the deadline of their agreement, Mulroney arrives in Chicago to introduce Roberts to his seemingly perfect fiancee (Cameron Diaz) and announce their wedding in just three days. That leaves the shocked Julia with just three short days to sabotage the wedding and marry the man she now realizes she's loved all along. With potential heartbreak waiting in the wings, she'll either get what she wants or pay the price for her selfish behavior, and Ronald Bass's cleverly constructed screenplay keeps us guessing to the very end. Rupert Everett scored rave reviews for his scene-stealing performance as Robert's gay friend who goes along with her scheming (but only so far), and even as she makes her character's needy desperation disarmingly appealing, Roberts wisely allows Diaz to capitalize on her charming time in the spotlight. As the romantic outcome remains uncertain, the viewer is held in a state of giddy suspense, and director P.J. Hogan pulls off some hilarious scenes (like a restaurant full of people singing the Dionne Warwick hit "I Say a Little Prayer") that could easily have fallen flat in the hands of a less talented filmmaker. It's no surprise that this was one of the box-office smashes of 1997. --Jeff Shannon

classic Rom-com June 9, 2009 Jennifer O'Meara (Seattle, WA) If you're a fan of romantic comedies, this one should definitely make your list. Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz are both charming. There isn't much soppy romance, just a lot of amusing scenes, mostly featuring Roberts behaving somewhat outlandishly. The movie doesn't drag on, and just generally fun. Recommended. Roberts flies to Chicago to try and stop an ex from marrying Cameron Diaz. It's obviously a poor plan, but it's funny to watch. If you don't like romantic comedies, obviously, skip it!
my best friends wedding February 21, 2009 Mary C. Scurfield (san francisco,ca) this movie is a surprisingly delightful comedy. any movie that makes you laugh is great
The Decline and Fall of the Holywood Romance February 8, 2009 True North (Edmonton) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Who is everyone kidding? There are no heart-felt feelings, no deep stirrings of the human soul. The lack of true romance is best demonstrated when Evert arrives in Chicago and he has a conversation with Roberts. The question comes up - did he come see her for a "quick f__k". (And this movie is rated PG-13???) Kids in junior high have more intelligence than this. The movie is just vapid Hollywood nonsense. If you want a great Hollywood romance, try "The Awful Truth" or "It Happened One Night". Both of these movies were made long before I as born, but have enduring qualities. "My Best Friend's Wedding" will justly fade into oblivion before too long.
Great Movie, Fast Servoce January 12, 2009 Julie M. Hofstede (Largo, FL) I got the product faster than I expected. I am very pleased with the whole process.
A slew of great performances elevate this comedic hit... October 9, 2008 Andrew Ellington (Mulholland Drive) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Sharp-witted and genuinely engaging, `My Best Friend's Wedding' is a surefire hit for anyone interested in a crowd pleasing romantic comedy. It has a few missteps, that's a give in, but the charming performances and blissful ending (not one you might expect) make up for the few errors in judgment. The film tells the story of Julianne Potter, a successful woman approaching thirty who is afraid of falling in love. Truth be told, she is in love, with Michael O'Neal, her best friend of over nine years. The two had once been together but quickly fell apart only to realize that they were too close to be lovers. When Michael calls to inform Julianne he is engaged she is suddenly thrown into panic mode as she realizes that she needs to be with Michael. She flies off for the wedding with one plan in mind; to break up the happy couple. She never expected Kim, Michael's fiancee, to be as sweet and perfect as she was, but her perfection was only more fuel to the fire. Julianne does everything in her power to ruin the relationship between Michael and Kim, but everything she does only seems to bring them closer together. Her closest friend George comes to her aid, but even his help makes little impact. It isn't until Julianne goes too far that she realizes if she truly loves this man, she just may need to let him go. The performances are all top notch, especially from Roberts, Diaz and Everett. Julia is always a delight, and her catty humor here is brilliantly sarcastic and genuine to say the least. The one fault I found with this film (aside from the corny opening sequences) is that the character of Julianne is almost so evil you forget that you are supposed to like her. Julia does her best to make this character relatable and likable, but the script doesn't help her out too much and we wind up hating her in parts. Sure, she turns around in the end and earns our love, but getting there can be rough. Diaz and Everett have our unwavering love and devotion throughout the entire film though, each of them delivering spunky, funny and honest performances. Diaz is a comedic gem who devours her `ditzy girl' character with warmth and Everett takes his `sidekick' character to another level with scene stealing wit and comedic timing (the whole `singing in the restaurant' and the last dance scene are prime examples of his brilliance). I'm really not a fan of Mulroney. He's serviceable, but that's about it. He was really the other misstep. I just didn't find him interesting enough to be the object of these two women's affections. Both women, in their own ways, are real catches. Julianne is confident and successful and devoted, and Kim is beautiful and spontaneous and vibrant. Michael was kind of a dud. It's a good thing the film is less interested in him and more interested in the other characters. I will say, I really enjoyed this movie. Sure, I hated Julianne in parts, but maybe that was the point (I don't think it was, but the minor misstep is forgivable in the end). The script is really funny, and that makes up for a lot ("I could be jello"). I recommend this movie to any fan of the genre or the star, for Roberts is at the top of her game.
