Product Description When Robin returns from the Crusades after King Richard, he faces the crazed King John, the Sheriff of Nottingham, and Marian who became a nun when he abandoned her. Genre: Feature Film-Drama Rating: PG Release Date: 16-JUL-2002 Media Type: DVD
Amazon.com essential video This underrated Richard Lester film is really a classic--and one of the most romantic movies ever made. Working from James Goldman's script, Lester casts Sean Connery as an aged Robin Hood, returned after years away at the Crusades with an increasingly mad King Richard (Richard Harris). Robin and Little John (a very funny Nicol Williamson) return to find that the sheriff of Nottingham (Robert Shaw) is up to his old nasty tricks--and that Maid Marian (Audrey Hepburn) is now a nun. Lester brings the same touch to this period film that he did to The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers, blending authenticity with a knowing wink at the conventions of period films. But the heart of this film is the very palpable emotion between Hepburn and Connery (and between Connery and Williamson). The ending is guaranteed three hankies, minimum. --Marshall Fine

realistic and captivating February 4, 2010 J. Munyon This 1976 movie takes up well beyond most other movies about Robin Hood and his love for Maid Marian. The story here has more to do with them both in their later years, describing what it is like to be in the twilight of your life instead of the vigorous vibrant and happy times of young adulthood as portrayed typically by Errol Flynn in the 1938 version of Robin Hood. Robin and Marian has an older version of Robin Hood, Little John, Tuck, and Will Scarlet, along with the older version of Maid Marian of course, and catches up with them all reuniting accidentally and for a while the movie is almost a comedy. Having always been a fan of the story because it is the ultimate underdog story where the good guys triumph categorically over the bad guys, I have a great appreciation for this movie with Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn - quite surprised to see Richard Harris and his well-done performance of a despotic monarch whose time has come and gone, and none too well. The ending of this movie is pretty much how I had always pictured in my own mind and is believable and likely to have been the final chapter for Robin and Marian. Although there is substantial realistic violence in this movie, it is as it should be and actually fits the story. The elements of adventure, romance, tragedy, and ancient history all blend together wonderfully in this movie that has the most realistic characters, architecture, and landscapes of any Robin Hood movie I've seen. Robert Shaw is quite convincing as the Sheriff of Nottingham, and his mannerisms were exactly as I have always pictured such a character to conduct himself by. If you like the story of Robin Hood, you'll like this movie. James Goldman wrote the story, and Richard Lester directed it; neither of whom owes anybody any apology whatsoever for this movie. I say yes, definitely yes, buy this DVD.
A brilliant work from the 70's October 19, 2009 David Kelly (Petersburg, VA United States) There was a lot of nonsense out of the 70s. This was one movie that really impressed the pants off me on first sitting. Some reviewers decry the nature of the piece, but others have correctly pointed out that this is consonant with the end of the Robin Hood legend. This is not an action film. It is theatrical. The script is wonderful. Trenchantly funny and tragic in it's human frailness and cupidity. The overly indulgent camera shots and the incessantly unimaginative, typical John Barry score are minor annoyances branding this as a 70s piece. It all adds to the ennui that seems to blight the characters unable to escape their natures and condemned to a bittersweet saga.
This movie really is a gem. I've visited it many times and found it still refreshes and amuses me.
Wasted Classic. October 18, 2009 D. Nuce (Chihuahua, Mexico) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Robin Hood. Sean Connery. Maid Marian. Audrey Hepburn. The Sheriff of Nottingham. Robert Shaw. Music. John Barry.
If you think this sounds like the perfect mixture for a classic film, think again.
Despite having so many things going for it, Robin and Marian ends up being nothing more than a typical 70's action movie.
Typical 70's ending. Everybody dies. Typical rating, PG. Despite the fact that this film contains harsh profanity (mostly religious), sexual situations, bloody violence, and brief male nudity.
In other words, not a family movie...
Not even a movie for adults.
Deliriously slow. Lacks excitement and a good script. Despite good performances from its lead stars this film lacks.
Not a total let down, but not worth a spot on my shelf.
Audrey as Maid Marian ..... September 14, 2009 John Randle Excellent quality CD. Had not heard of this production before .. it is definitely worth watching, both for Audrey's wonderful performance and Sean Connery's classic acting. Strongly recommend it to complete your collection.
Excellent February 22, 2009 Sharon S My mom got her video within 12 days of ordering, so not as fast as from other sellers I've used, but still fast enough! She said the video was great - thank you!
