Product Description Movie DVD
Amazon.com Salma Hayek makes up for many bad movies with her fierce performance in this sumptuous film. Hayek plays the Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo, whose tempestuous life with her unfaithful husband, muralist Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), drives the story of Frida. Maverick director Julie Taymor (Titus, the Broadway stage production of The Lion King) pulls out a wealth of gorgeous visuals to capture everything from the horrific bus accident that damaged Kahlo's spine to her and Rivera's trip to New York City, where Rivera's political leanings ruptured a commission from the Rockefeller family. Though the script spends too much time telling us how great Frida's painting is (rather than trusting in the power of the images themselves), Taymor's dynamic energy and Kahlo's forceful personality give Frida genuine emotional impact. The superb cast includes Roger Rees, Valeria Golino, Ashley Judd, Geoffrey Rush, Antonio Banderas, and Edward Norton. --Bret Fetzer

Even though a billion people already reviewed this... June 13, 2009 CollegeGrad09 I have to say it will always be one of my favorite films. A colorful, beautifully scored, artistic, and emotional portrayal of an exciting, difficult, and interesting life. Julie Taymor's best.
Film making at it's best. May 10, 2009 Lalo C. Dominguez (Redondo Beach, CA., USA) Frida is a film to be enjoyed with all your senses. The acting, the directing, the music and the costumes are fabulous. A highly recommended viewing.
Frida the Artist, Revolutionary and "Real" person! May 8, 2009 B. Melendez (Port Richey, FL USA)
This was truly a remarkable movie for me. Loved it and each time I watch it I learn a little more about "human nature". Selma was magnificent in this movie. Based on a real life character and her ambitions.... "not" to give up and to be her own person. I loved this movie, but some may not approve of all the subject matter. Recommended for open-minded viewer.
Great Movie April 22, 2009 P. Meier This was a great movie that keep me interested througout it's entirety. I was however, disappointed that it didn't have the option for Spanish audio (French???), although it did have Spanish subtitles. viva la revolucion
HAYEK'S BEST PERFORMANCE February 7, 2009 Geary A., Jones Julie Taymor's visually stunning film on Frida is almost as beautiful as Kahlo's art, and Hayek's performance as the strong-willed artist is the best of her career. The soundtrack, and cinematography are glorious. I enjoyed it almost as much as an old bio-pic classic called LUST FOR LIFE ( with Kirk Douglas as Vincent Van Gogh ), and a bit more than POLLOCK ( with Ed Harris ). Alfred Molina as Mexico's greatest artist, Diego Rivera, is, as usual, superb.
