Amazon.com The Cat in the Hat is a marketing ploy disguised as a wildly designed movie for hyperactive kids, and it could use a dose of Ritalin. It hardly matters, though, because kids will surely enjoy the rampant romp that occurs when the top-hatted feline convinces young Sally (Dakota Fanning) and Conrad (Spencer Breslin) to wreak havoc in the home their mother (Kelly Preston) has neatly prepared for an upcoming party. It's all in the name of fun, and while Seuss's classic rhymes are relegated to voice-over narration, director Bo Welch capitalizes on his background as one of Hollywood's most gifted production designers (with credits including Edward Scissorhands and Men in Black), turning the Seussian town of "Anville" into a playful pastiche of pastels. As played by Mike Myers under layers of fur and latex, Dr. Seuss's mischievous Cat is mayhem personified, and the movie suffers from his anything-goes approach to getting a laugh. And though Myers delivers a few laughs while channeling voices from his own comedic repertoire (including "Coffee Talk" maven Linda Richman), a little of this Cat goes a long way, and he nearly wears out his welcome. --Jeff Shannon
Product Description This adaptation of the classic children's book stars Mike Meyers (AUSTIN POWERS) as the wily talking cat with a tall striped hat and more than a few tricks up his sleeve. Set in a colorful make-believe world, the film tells the classic tale of a sister and brother, Sally (Dakota Fanning) and Conrad (Spencer Breslin), who pass a rainy afternoon with their crotchety baby sitter Mrs. Kwan (Amy Hill), during which they receive a visit from the mysterious Cat in the Hat, who leads them on a series of colorful, illogical, silly misadventures. Meanwhile their mother (Kelly Preston), her paranoid boss (Sean Hayes), and her phony boyfriend (Alec Baldwin), present obstacles for the children as they become part of the Cat's chaotic world. With candy colored sets that pop off the screen and zany special effects that give the story a decidedly 21st century spin, this movie presents a fast-paced and very nontraditional rendering of Dr. Seuss. The rhyming lines that usually characterize Dr. Seuss stories are referenced here, but modern jokes that riff on television advertisements and pop psychology are given more importance. Dakota Fanning is utterly adorable as little Sally, and Thing 1 and Thing 2 are delightful in their chittering and acrobatics. A bright and happy film packed with dazzling stunts, DR. SEUSS' THE CAT IN THE HAT is an entertaining treat.

Potential Lost ... December 6, 2008 D. Wentworth (Ohio) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This movie is questionable for the PG rating. There are a couple of unnecessary comments in a movie geared for kids. PG-13 would have solved that and I wouldn't have played it for a 5 year old then found myself telling him for days that yelling "dirty hoe" was inappropriate. In the spirit of shrek and the other recent releases of kid movies that entertain the adults with clever humor I really didn't find anything "clever" here. The few adult oriented lines such as the one above about the "dirty hoe" , stick out from the rest of the movie dialog in a way that seem forced. It was like they wrote a great little kids movie then went back and forced some adult humor into the script hoping for a duel audience win over. It don't work. The slap stick comedy is good for some giggles, and there are some lines that were allot of fun, but overall I found "cats" laugh so annoying that it was hard to focus on the rest of the dialogue. Most of all, I wouldn't want to watch this over and over .. and I sure don't want my kids to - so I sent my copy (on vcr tape) to the local goodwill.
My three absolutely love it November 24, 2008 Tess of the twins plus one (SF bay area) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
While I agree the film is slow and a bit unimaginative (I was not a fan of the computer generated visuals) Mike Myers is hysterical and my three kids (all under 7) LOVE this video. I have to give it four stars on that account.
Not nearly as bad as I expected October 21, 2008 Curt Remmel (New York) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I finally broke down and took my 4 year old to see this at the $1 cinema . Glad she wasn't 7 or 8. This is not a kid's movie. The adult jokes went over my child's head. If I had taken an elementary school child to this I probably would have given it a 1. As it is I gave it a 7. Yes, it had a slew of bad taste jokes, but I laughed several times. Mike Meyers is a funny cat. And I think it should be nominated for an Oscar for set design. Yes, Dr. Seuss is probably rolling in his grave at the liberties that the scriptwriters took. I don't know what the filmakers were thinking with all the off color innuendo, but I laughed a lot more than I would have expected to.
A Retelling Of A Classic!!! September 9, 2008 PUMPKIN MAN 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Although it's pretty different from the book, it's still a good and funny movie. A lot of things were changed and added, it's not really a big deal. If they didn't add some things, the movie would be too short. Mike Myers did a great job as the cat. He's funny and full of mischief. There are some adult plots like the cat is about to explain where babies come from, and the sexy Paris Hilton makes a cameo. I wonder what Dr. Seuss would think about the movie. If you love family comedy, you'll love DR. SEUSS' THE CAT IN THE HAT!!!
