Product Description Dramatization of the life and career of popular musician Ray Charles. Genre: Feature Film-Drama Rating: PG13 Release Date: 17-JAN-2006 Media Type: DVD
Amazon.com Jamie Foxx's uncannily accurate performance isn't the only good thing about Ray. Riding high on a wave of Oscar buzz, Foxx proved himself worthy of all the hype by portraying blind R&B legend Ray Charles in a warts-and-all performance that Charles approved shortly before his death in June 2004. Despite a few dramatic embellishments of actual incidents (such as the suggestion that the accidental drowning of Charles's younger brother caused all the inner demons that Charles would battle into adulthood), the film does a remarkable job of summarizing Charles's strengths as a musical innovator and his weaknesses as a philandering heroin addict who recorded some of his best songs while flying high as a kite. Foxx seems to be channeling Charles himself, and as he did with the life of Ritchie Valens in La Bamba, director Taylor Hackford gets most of the period details absolutely right as he chronicles Ray's rise from "chitlin circuit" performer in the early '50s to his much-deserved elevation to legendary status as one of the all-time great musicians. Foxx expertly lip-syncs to Ray Charles' classic recordings, but you could swear he's the real deal in a film that honors Ray Charles without sanitizing his once-messy life. --Jeff Shannon More on Ray Charles Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music (CD) | The Genius of Ray Charles (CD) | Ray Charles and Betty Carter--Dedicated to You (CD) | Genius & Soul--The 50th Anniversary Collection (CD) | Ray: A Tribute to the Movie, the Music, and the Man (book) | More Albums by Ray Charles |

Scandal Is Nothing New February 15, 2010 Scott (Texas) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was born in 1981, so I missed every event featured in this movie. Ray was always that smiling, blind piano guy to me. I had no idea he was involved in such shameful scandal. But what's even more interesting is that at least one of his scandals was based on a noble cause instead of a shameful one.
Ray is a perfect picture of humanity. Struggling through through neverending internal and external obstacles, and always on the verge of total collapse no matter how high his talent and hard work had taken him. In fact, the higher he went, the closer to collapse he seemed to get. Why is it that so often no blessing or curse deters us from loving the very things that kill us?
I'll never look at Ray's music the same way again. This was a wonderful film.
Ray January 2, 2010 Arnita D. Brown (USA) Ray Charles was quite a man; this movie not only knows it, but understands it. Jamie Foxx gives a landmark performance in this movie. It takes all of five seconds, tops, to believe that Jamie Foxx is Ray Charles. This movie is amazing.
Ray, the movie December 8, 2009 Sandra J. Hines (Denver,CO) I really enjoyed this movie, I saw it on television months ago, but wanted to see it again. I'm glad I have my own copy now, I can watch it whenever I want to.
"Ray" DVD October 19, 2009 R. Stan Soth (On The Road) This is a very well done rendition of Ray Charles' life with an outstanding sound track.

IN THE FIFTIES . . . when the other kids were out-
side, playing, I was inside . . . Listening to Yhe
Great RAY CHARLES. It came to be, that the more I
heard about him --- the more I wanted to hear about him.
IN the Year 2000 . . . in Akron OHIO, I finally got
to see -- in person --- MY Childhood Idol. This movie
makes losing him, some Fifty years later, bearable . . .
