    Editorial Reviews:

    Description
Based on Henry van Dyke's classic, The Story of the Other Wise Man, this fictional story set in Biblical times is told in gently comic terms. A Magi named Artaban (Martin Sheen) sees a sign in the heavens that he hopes will lead him and his faithful servant to the Messiah. Artaban takes with him three precious gifts to present to the Messiah. For 33 years Artaban pursues Jesus, only to miss Him at every turn. Along the way, Artaban uses his gifts to help people in dire need. He now has nothing to present to the Messiah when he finds Him. The story culminates on Easter Sunday as Artaban, old and dying, finally encounters the new King, bringing peace to his life. A deeply moving experience examining what true faith really means. Starring Martin Sheen and Alan Arkin.

    2 out of 5 stars 4th wiseman dvd   May 1, 2009

i love the story but the picture looks like it was copied from a very old vhs tape; blury and faded. it made me think it might have been a pirated copy!

4 out of 5 stars Good Message About 'Giving'   February 13, 2009
    Craig Connell (Lockport, NY USA)
This made-for-TV movie turned out to be much better than I anticipated, thanks to the two main characters, played by top actors, and a very thought-provoking message.

This is a fictional Biblical story, but one that leaves one reflecting about ourselves, regarding where our hearts lie, and the importance of helping our fellow man. Martin Sheen plays the "fourth wise man" or fourth Magi who knew about the upcoming birth of The Messiah, like the three who did make it to see baby Jesus in Bethelem.

Unfortunately, "Artaban," as he was named, got sidetracked en route. He kept running into people in need and he helped each one by giving them the gifts he was intending for Christ. This went on for years, until he finally meets Jesus, at the cross.

He is accompanied by Alan Arkin's pessimistic servant "Orontes," who plays off Sheen's optimistic character with humorous results.

To those who are repelled by any Biblical implications, this movie is simply an old-fashioned story more about giving, helping others out who are in need, than anything else....and if that's offensive to you, God help you!

5 out of 5 stars Very Moving   February 8, 2009
    JohnNDFW (Dallas, TX United States)
A few years ago, I saw another version of this on a Christian TV station and it looked as though it was a high school produced film. When I searched for the title, I purchased this knowing full well it wasn't the same film, but it is far better. This film is so moving that I have given it as a Christmas gift to friends who "hate Christmas". I've always been fascinated by the Magi, but this story takes it to a new level.

3 out of 5 stars Story? What Story?   January 2, 2009
    nonamespecified
The premise to the story sounds interesting, and the pairing of Arkin and Sheen had promise, but for me this film falls flat, though the ending is touching. It has a good message but is just a little too cliched and the acting is a little too flat. Plus, there is the suggestion of some humor in the telling, but I couldnt really see any, it seems to me as stultified as any of the conventional takes on 'The Greatest Story Ever Told'.
