Amazon.com An oddball love story about a fey loner named Sam (Johnny Depp), who falls in love with the mentally unbalanced Joon (Mary Stuart Masterson), who lives in the care of her protective brother Benny (Aidan Quinn). This 1993 story is hard to swallow, with its message that love can conquer a brand of mental illness that manifests itself in pyromania: Joon has a bad habit of going a bit around the bend and setting fires, but Sam's tender care apparently has the cure for what ails her. Still, if you want proof that Depp has significant chops as a physical comedian, give this film a try: He does note-perfect renditions of slapstick routines made famous by Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. --Marshall Fine

Very Good Flick March 5, 2010 Red Sox Fan (Abilene TX) I fell in love with Mary Stuart Masterson in Some Kind of Wonderful. She and Johnny Depp are great together in this movie.
Great plot with deep meaning! February 5, 2010 C. Hale (Liberty, IN, USA) This movie very effectively protrays two people who are each schizophrenic. It is halarious and entertaining, yet at the same time shows a very real and serious condition. There are some amuzing scenes and a few sad. The ending is for you to see. Terrific actor and actress too.
makes you smile November 21, 2009 RJC (NY) This is the ultimate "feel good" movie. I am on Amazon now buying my 3rd copy of Benny and Joon, since I have worn the past two DVDs thin--you cannot get sick of this movie. The scene with Sam swinging across the window always makes me smile! Not many know about this movie, and I wouldn't say its an amazing feat in film making, but it's a great story. Makes you believe in happy endings.
Rediscover A Great Early Johnny Depp Movie!! July 28, 2009 MUZIK4THAPEOPLE!! (Orlando, FL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I remember seeing this movie way back in the early 90's,
then I rediscovered it the other day at a freinds house on DVD
and fell in love with it all over again!
I don't think that I really appreciated all the nuances of Depp's
very ethereal and quicksilver performance back when I first saw it.
He studied silent film great Buster Keaton's classic physical comedy
routines to the letter for this role and it paid off!
This is a very cute, quirky and feel good story that will get
you wrapped up in it all over again if you're already familiar with it,
and will endear you to it if you've never seen it before!
---A definite Johnny Depp collectible.
Johnny Depp sparkles... June 2, 2009 L. Alper (Englewood CO) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Benny & Joon is a mediocre example of a typical made-for-TV-movie. Except for Johnny Depp.
The scenes without Mr. Depp, featuring Aidan Quinn & Mary Stuart Masterson in the title roles, tend to drag, despite the best efforts of the actors. When Depp comes into the scene, there's suddenly life. It's truly amazing.
Overall score for movie: C With Johnny Depp: B+
