When Randy the video geek rattles off the rules of surviving a horror movie in Wes Craven's Scream, he speaks for a generation of filmgoers who are all too aware of slasher movie clichés. Playfully scripted by Kevin Williamson with a self-aware wink and more than a few nods to its grandfathers (from Psycho to Halloween to the Friday the 13th dynasty), Scream skewers teen horror conventions with loving reverence while re-creating them in a modern, movie-savvy context. And so goes the series, which continues the satirical spoofing by tackling (what else?) sequels while sustaining its own self-contained mythology. Catty reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) turns grisly murders into lurid bestsellers, a cult of killer wannabes continues to hunt spunky psycho-survivor Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) for their 15 minutes of fame, and a cheesy movie series (Stab) develops within the movie series.

Scream remains the high point of the series--a fresh take on a genre long since collapsed into routine, but Scream 2 spoofs itself with witty humor ("Why would anyone want to do that? Sequels suck!" opines college film student Randy), and delights with more elaborate set pieces and all-new rules for surviving a horror movie sequel. The endangered veterans of the original film reunite one last time for Scream 3, which plays out on the movie set of Stab 3. (It's a trilogy within a trilogy!) With Williamson gone, replacement screenwriter Ehran Kruger tries to mine the formula one more time. It's a little tired by now, and pale imitations (Urban Legend, I Know What You Did Last Summer) have further drained the zeitgeist, but the film bubbles with bright humor, and director Craven is stylistically at the top of his game. As a trilogy, it remains both the most consistently entertaining and self-aware horror series ever made. --Sean Axmaker

1 out of 5 stars Screaming Mad about Trilogy   January 30, 2010
    Screaming Mad (NY)
The Scream Box Set came in great time and was wonderfully received by the recipient but to our horror, the second video was filled with so many scratches and lines we were unable to watch it. Now what? The Box Set Triogy isn't in production any more.

5 out of 5 stars "Entertaining and Scary"   January 25, 2010
Terry Richard (Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada)
"Scream 3" is just as good as the first two films in the "Scream" trilogy and much of the original cast returns including Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox. The plot deals with the murders happening on the Hollywood set of "Stab 3" , the sequel to the fictional movie depicting the Greensboro killings. The scares are terrifying, the script strong and suspenseful, and the murders original and heart-pounding. The movie had a huge budget of over 40 million dollars, and the film would rake in over 160 million, making the "Scream" franchise one of the most successful horror movie franchises in history. The DVD is filled with scary bonuses including the trailer, outtakes, deleted scenes, videos, behind-the-scenes interviews, and more. It was also recently announced that "Scream 4" is in preproduction, and both Courtney Cox and David Arquette have stated they would be interested in reprising their roles. Creator and writer Kevin Williamson is also scheduled to return as writer. Nothing has been finalized so stay tuned!

4 out of 5 stars "In the Third One, All Bets Are Off"   January 18, 2010
Mark Baker (Santa Clarita, CA United States)
In the aftermath of the second round of killings, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has retreated to a house in the middle of nowhere and works as a phone counselor. But her life is about to be shaken up once again when a new round of killings begin. At first she tries to ignore them, but when the killer calls her at home, she realizes she has no choice.

The new round of killings seem to be centered around the production of Stab 3. As the cast begins to fear for their lives, Sidney teams up with Gale Weather s (Courtney Cox Arquette) and Dewey Riley (David Arquette). Why is the killer leaving pictures of Sid's mother on the victims? Who will survive the latest blood bath?

This is generally considered the weakest entry in the series, and the arguments against it have good merit. Neve Campbell wasn't available for the full production, and Sidney's decreased presence really hurt the film since the franchise has always been about her. Original scribe Kevin Williamson isn't back at all, and this film doesn't quite have the same satirical punch of the first two. And the ending seems rather farfetched and out there even for this franchise.

Despite these weaknesses, I can't help but enjoy the film. While the jokes aren't in the same manner, there are still some funny moments in the film. The suspense in the few scenes is still very intense. And the final fight is very nicely done.

While I can understand the complaints, I still enjoy this film. It frightens and provides a few laughs along the way. If you've enjoyed the first two, you'll want to give this one a stab.

4 out of 5 stars ONCE AGAIN, A SCREAMING GOOD HORROR FILM 8.5 OUT OF 10   October 24, 2009
    ACEMAN1 (Ripon, California)
Unfortunately, critics didn't particularly like this film, and people are divided about this third film. While I will admit that it falls below the standards set by the previous films, this is still a very good slasher that puts on a good show, and like its predecessors still serves as a great late-night horror film.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: The film starts off with Cotton Weary (The man Sidney accused of murdering her mother in the first film) who is now a millionaire who has his own television show, and then he and his girlfriend are murdered in their lavish home by another copycat killer. Then we are once again introduced to Sidney Prescott who has tried to move on from the events of the first two films and now lives in a secluded place and runs a telephone women's helpline. However, her life as well as the lives of Gale Weathers and Dewy are turned upside down once again when actors on the set of the film Stab 3 start getting killed by the copycat killer and the other actors on the set are also dragged into a grand plot to killing Sidney. Unfortunately, Kevin Williamson didn't write the script for this film, and it doesn't leave you guessing as much as the first two. It's simply an okay plot.
MUSIC: Marco Beltrami is no slouch once again and the music in this film is pretty good and is never boring.
ACTION: This film isn't as action-packed as the first two and the gore has been downgraded which is disappointing. This film is still pretty action-packed though and was rarely ever boring, but there were some boring moments which dragged the film down. But, for the most part this area is pretty good like it should be.
ACTING: Returning actors Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette deliver great performances once again as they did in the previous films, but the other actors aren't so notable. The other actors are a mixed bag; some are good while others are just plain awful. Overall, this area is half and half.
HUMOR: This film has a bit more humor than the second film which is a plus. But it doesn't have the humor flare of the first film. But still, this film can be pretty funny and there is a good deal of witty dialogue.
OVERALL: Despite the areas this film lacks in, it's still a great film to watch. While people are mixed on it, it sure beats the hell out of watching crap like Prom Night. This is a solid third entry that is well-made and still pretty entertaining, and once again is a great late-night horror flick. I can't wait for the upcoming Scream 4!
THE GOOD: Great music, pretty action-packed, a good sense of humor, and a good portion of the actors are good.
THE BAD: Underwhelming plot, not as much action, not all actors are great, and some boring moments.

5 out of 5 stars In the end, no one can hear you Scream...   July 6, 2009
    plastic kiss (Ventura, CA USA)
Scream 3 wraps up the trilogy of the best American Horror/Slasher revivial of the 90's and early 2000's. After narrowly surviving 2 psychotic events, Syndney Prescott is now in hiding, secluded from any human contact, and coping with the horrific events of her life, and her mother's death. And that is what the final chapter of a horror trilogy is all about... going back to the begining and discoving there are more skeletons in the closet then you or anyone knew.

Scream 3 takes Kevin Williamson's amazing horror story, and concludes the 3rd chapter of Sydney Prescott and the Ghost faced killer that never stays dead. This time, the success of STAB and STAB 2, plus all the events at the Winsor College have launched a STAB 3 movie, which mirrors the haunting events of Sydney's life...and the terrifying eventst to come.

Again, some of the best cinematic elements, scenes, and nods to the genre/its best, Scream 3 loops you all the way back to the begining of the story, and leaves you gasping for air. Turn down the lights, and grab a blanket, for the thrilling and terror filled conclustion to the Scream story....

    ... or is it?

"A horror story cannot have an ending... until the main character is killed"

    Scream 4 is coming soon...
