Amazon.com essential video Screenwriter William Goldman's novel The Princess Bride earned its own loyal audience on the strength of its narrative voice and its gently satirical, hyperbolic spin on swashbuckled adventure that seemed almost purely literary. For all its derring-do and vivid over-the-top characters, the book's joy was dictated as much by the deadpan tone of its narrator and a winking acknowledgement of the cliches being sent up. Miraculously, director Rob Reiner and Goldman himself managed to visualize this romantic fable while keeping that external voice largely intact: using a storytelling framework, avuncular Grandpa (Peter Falk) gradually seduces his skeptical grandson (Fred Savage) into the absurd, irresistible melodrama of the title story. And what a story: a lowly stable boy, Westley (Cary Elwes), pledges his love to the beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright), only to be abducted and reportedly killed by pirates while Buttercup is betrothed to the evil Prince Humperdinck. Even as Buttercup herself is kidnapped by a giant, a scheming criminal mastermind, and a master Spanish swordsman, a mysterious masked pirate (could it be Westley?) follows in pursuit. As they sail toward the Cliffs of Insanity... The wild and woolly arcs of the story, the sudden twists of fate, and, above all, the cartoon-scaled characters all work because of Goldman's very funny script, Reiner's confident direction, and a terrific cast. Elwes and Wright, both sporting their best English accents, juggle romantic fervor and physical slapstick effortlessly, while supporting roles boast Mandy Patinkin (the swordsman Inigo Montoya), Wallace Shawn (the incredulous schemer Vizzini), and Christopher Guest (evil Count Rugen) with brief but funny cameos from Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, and Peter Cook. --Sam Sutherland

an sbsolute delight -- make sure you read the book, too June 20, 2009 Michael Giltz A great, lovable film about the tongue-in-cheek fairy tale of the Princess Bride, her masked lover and Mandy Patinkin looking for revenge. It looks terrific on BluRay, undoubtedly, but it's $20 more than the standard DVD. On the other hand, this BluRay also contains a standard DVD so you've got a copy for the car or the kids and a copy on BluRay for the home entertainment system. If you don't own it, this could be worthwhile. But $20 more is a huge premium. Visit me at michaelgiltz dot com.
LOVE THIS MOVIE!! June 2, 2009 Shuree D. Munden-Wagstaff (Southern California) GREAT family movie! Funny, and well written, classic fairy tale stuff meets modern world. You wont be disappointed!
based on my daughter loving this movie June 1, 2009 Dwight E. Douglass (florida) The Princess Bride is my daughter's favorite movie of all times and the new edition is awesome according to her. She is probably one of the leading authorities on the movie/book and if she is thrilled with this movie, it has to be good!
Classic Fairy Tale May 24, 2009 D. Sun (Vallejo, CA United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is one of those movies that surprised me. I really didn't believe this would be a film that would hold my interest, much less turn into a favorite. Like many 80's films it shows it's age, but the humor still shines through and the jokes, characters, gags, and story still work. This is an excellent film to share with a child, girlfriend, or as a family.
The blu-ray is worth it May 16, 2009 P Brown Jr (Ohio USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Blu-ray update: The blu-ray picture is a definite improvement over the standard DVD. The better resolution of the blu-ray format allows us to see more detail in the landscapes and scenery, and my daughter was the first to notice that it reveals intricate patterns in the clothing/costumes. The sound is better also; perhaps an audiophile can rate that more specifically.
