Product Description Academy Award winner* Robert Duvall (Tender Mercies) and Sean Penn (Dead Man Walking) star in a film that captures the vivid mark that gang life has left upon Los Angeles (The New York Times). Directed by the legendary Dennis Hopper (Easy Rider) and based on a compelling story by Michael Schiffer and Richard DiLello Colors is grimy hard-edged heart-thumping action (Movieline)! Seasoned street cop Bob Hodges (Duvall) and his new young know-it-all partner Danny McGavin (Penn) are forced to work together in the L.A.P.D. s renowned C.R.A.S.H. anti-gang unit. Together they set out to investigate a murder between two rival gangs. Hated and hunted by both sides the cops get trapped in the middle of a turf war. With nowhere to turn they are ambushed double-crossed and shot at in a take-no-prisoners street battle. As the violence escalates these two diametrically opposed men must come to terms with one important fact -- to stay alive they must come together!System Requirements: Running Time 120 MinFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: ACTION/ADVENTURE UPC: 027616867711 Manufacturer No: 1002570
Amazon.com Robert Duvall plays a veteran street cop assigned to a Los Angeles gang unit. He takes a headstrong young cop (Sean Penn) under his wing as a partner and shows him the ropes on Watts's mean streets. Penn soon realizes that his testosterone-fueled ways and hair-trigger temper won't get him very far when dealing with the gang-ridden neighborhoods of L.A. Colors is a landmark movie in several respects: it helped bring director Dennis Hopper back into the spotlight after years of self-induced obscurity. Its success at the box office forced Los Angeles's gang problems into the public consciousness and prefigured the next wave of "hood" movies (Boyz N the Hood, Menace II Society, New Jack City) by several years. Though the late-'80s milieu is a bit dated, Colors is still a vivid, absorbing film. Hopper and screenwriter Michael Schiffer give all the characters a very human dimension and go to great lengths to show gang life from both the cops' and the gangsters' points of view. Wisely, they stir in elements of the cop drama, buddy movie, and action genres, leavened with a bit of humor here and there, while keeping a social conscience. Duvall is excellent as always, as the sympathetic cop, and Penn brings a great deal of depth to what could be an unlikable character. Violent, unsettling, and highly recommended. --Jerry Renshaw

You heard the one about the two bulls? June 24, 2009 Richard Ross Dennis Hopper directed this gritty gang drama set in the late '80s. His cinematographer is Haskell Wexler the director of 'Medium Cool'. Since the scenes focusing on gang life are handled with sensitivity the film almost feels like a documentary. Before things get too serious though Hopper throws in gratuitous sex, violence, and oddness to keep things running smoothly. Pop Hodges (Robert Duvall) is none too happy that he has just been put back on the streets to supervise his cocky new partner Danny (Sean Penn). Hodges served five years in the middle of the Bloods and Crips war zone and was relieved to have moved up in the department. Maybe this is why he isn't as fearless and gung ho as his partner. Danny loves to chase down perps on foot and then slap them around whereas Hodges likes to cuff em, get to know em, and then send them on their way. This doesn't fly with Danny and the two partners battle each other almost as much as the gangs they're assigned to bust up. When a young Blood is gunned down by an enemy Crip (Don Cheadle) the two put aside their differences long enough to conduct their own investigation. When the evidence reveals that one of the prime suspects is a man Hodges let go, him and Danny butt heads again. The film is gritty and authentic but that doesn't stop things from getting confusing and a bit boring. We are introduced to so many gang bangers, informants, and anti gang units that it's hard to keep track of who's working for who. The sexy Maria Conchita Alonso costars as a Latina who falls for Danny and puts her life at risk in the process. Set to an awesome soundtrack by Herbie Hancock that features several Ice T classics, 'Colors' gets by on it's powerful acting from Duvall and Penn. Still, this film isn't as effective as some of Hopper's other films as director.
Just Like Going to Work April 25, 2009 John Doe (SoCal) This was a great movie. If you want to see a realistic and authentic portrayal of street cops and jail deputies this is it. Duvall clearly did his research for this role. His mannerisms flawlessly represent a veteran cop without appearing contrived or overly dramatized. Penn did a credible job also; his swagger and poor judgment accurately reflected an officer with 4 to 8 years tenure. Watching this movie causes the same stir in the pit of my stomach that I felt 25 years ago breaking line-up and loading up the squad car for another futile day in the Heights. Any time I feel like reminiscing I just watch this movie. The gang violence was graphic, but not gratuitously so. Watching the jail deputies withhold medical care until the bloody inmate coughs up some useful intel was fairly humorous and realistic. Duvall's final scene sent a chill up my spine. Having cradled the head of a grievously injured officer after finding her laying in a pool of her own blood, this scene was all too real for me. The only distraction was casting Trinidad Silva as the same smooth-talking aging gangster diplomat that he played on Hill Street Blues. Had it not been for that character, watching this movie would have been just like going to work. Silva's character reminded me that this was only a movie. Whether or not this movie deserves critical acclaim is out of my domain. The movie works on a very visceral level. For the most part, it is an accurate and authentic depiction of the interaction between a seasoned veteran cop and a young buck full of piss and vinegar. It is a poignant reminder that good guys don't always finish first, and sometimes they even get killed. And it serves as a legitimate testament that gang violence is a very real and very serious problem. Rent this movie--you won't be disappointed.
