Amazon.com Except for feature-length animation, the musical has gone the way of the dinosaur. The Walt Disney company took a stab at reviving the live-action musical in 1992 with Newsies, a throwback picture with a curious subject. In 1899, the pint-sized newsboys delivering the New York papers go on strike against the unfair practices of news magnates Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst. The production is heavy on kiddie humor, although Christian Bale (the child star of Spielberg's Empire of the Sun) is charismatic as one of the older leaders of the revolt. The adult stars don't fare as well, with Robert Duvall doddering around as Pulitzer and Ann-Margret and Bill Pullman doing decorative duty. The film was not well received when first released, but hindsight reveals its charm (and allowed the young target audience to catch up with the picture on video). The first-time director is Kenny Ortega, the choreographer of Dirty Dancing, who brings plenty of energy to the action. --Robert Horton
Product Description Starring Academy Award® winner Robert Duvall and screen favorite Ann-Margret, here's the true story of a courageous group of newsboys who become unlikely heroes when they team up to fight an unscrupulous newspaper tycoon. Determined to make their dreams come true, they find the courage to challenge the powerful! Critically acclaimed from coast to coast -- if you're looking for must-see, feel-good entertainment, Newsies delivers on DVD!

Newsies January 31, 2010 Mary E. Rigby My daughter loved the movie. I gave to her for Christmas. They where great in sending it quickly so I would have it by Christmas.
A great time for everyone! January 24, 2010 Samantha Lynn Brickles (Indianapolis, IN. USA) This musical is the best of its time, and surpasses many even today. It may lack glitz and glamour, but makes up for both in amazingly intricate and beautiful choreography and chorus. Featuring Christian Bale at a young age, it's astounding to think that he would grow up to play 'Batman' in the latest installments. Unlike several feature musicals today, "Newsies" was originally aimed at a young generation of home-schooled children and teenagers, which I find makes the film more family oriented. Despite this, it's a wonderful time for all ages, including fabulous songs that will be stuck in your head for weeks afterwards. This Disney musical is great, (with an interesting and historical plot line!)and you won't regret watching it!
A Great Movie December 28, 2009 Alex Fish Highly recommended for anyone that really likes musicals that are not on the main list of films. Really entertaining, and the songs get stuck in your head.
Fun & the Bale is in it! October 21, 2009 Mme. Morris Fantastical musical that is fun for all ages. Not to mention, Christian Bale is adorable in it.
