| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Even more than most of David Lynch's deliberately bizarre and idiosyncratic movies, Dune is a "love-it-or-hate-it" affair. An ambitious, epic, utterly mind-boggling--and, let's admit it, all-out weird--adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic science fiction novel, Dune remains one of the most controversial films in the director's exceedingly provocative career. The story (if Dune can be said to have just one story) is complex and convoluted in the epic tradition; it has something to do with political intrigue and a planet that is home to a precious spice and gigantic sand worms. Think Shakespeare's Henry IV with a dash of Tremors, and set in another galaxy. But despite plenty of strangely whispered voice-overs that explain the characters' thoughts (and endlessly detailed exposition), storytelling is not really among the film's strong points. There are, however, a lot of memorably fantastic/grotesque images, an extraordinary cast, and a soundtrack featuring Toto. I told you it was weird. Among the stars are Kyle MacLachlan, José Ferrer, Dean Stockwell, Brad Dourif, Sting, Kenneth McMillan, Patrick Stewart, Sean Young, and Linda Hunt. --Jim Emerson

great movie March 2, 2010 K. jones (Fairbanks, Alaska USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a movie that makes you watch from beginning to end. If you miss any you might not be able to follow what happens next. It makes you think and it gives you an insight to the thoughts of the characters. It is a great movie!
Classic February 25, 2010 G. Boyd (Ohio) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm not a professional critic or anything. I buy movies with one idea in mind. Is this something i want my kid to watch when he is older? And the answer is Yes. This movie is a classic in many regards, it is something i can watch with my child in the room (no swearing or nudity) and it has a great story. If you don't have this movie in your collection then maybe it is time you should get it.
Dune O' Harm February 14, 2010 Ryan D. Peterson (Orem, UT USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Let me start by saying this is an okay movie if you can get past a few things. They do far too much voice over/internal monologue, they don't explain the story particularly well, and there are several somewhat gross moments where the Harkonens are involved. That's not a rousing endorsement, and it isn't meant to be. Even if you can accept those elements, the movie has a few problems. Even director David Lynch claims that he never had the chance to make a satisfactory final cut of the film.
The voice over/internal monologue was used because so much of the novel happens in the minds of the characters, which is hard to film. But the way it's used here is a bit too much at times. Several pieces of internal monologue could just as easily have been turned into dialogue or simply cut out completely by compensating with more emotive characters. It just feels somewhat lazy to rely on the voice over to tell the story.
The Harkonens are quite disgusting at times, and the baron has some kind of putrid skin condition on his face, but that makes it easy to see them as the evil people they are. Whether that is necessary or lazy story telling can be up to your personal judgment, but know that it isn't something for little kids.
But the biggest difficulty is the fact that it is very hard to tell a story this layered and detailed in just two hours and seventeen minutes. If you know the story already, you can follow it well enough (at least the parts that they haven't changed), but for people new to DUNE, it's easy to get lost. When it was originally released to theaters, some locations handed out "cheat sheets" to help the audience understand some of the terminology or politics of this new universe that Frank Herbert crated.
And don't even begin to wonder where the Weirding Devices came from. That's something they made in this movie with no real source from the book.

Im so happy for the fast shipping!!!! I needed for valentines day sow Im ready to give this DVD in super condition to my BFF!!! LOVE AMAZON!! LOVE FAST SHIPPING!
Remembering the first time I saw this. January 30, 2010 ELO's (Albany, GA) I knew very little about Dune until the movie hype. I remember going to see it in Lubbock Texas. Some of the early reviews were coming back negative, and yet it looked exciting. I was not really impressed with my first viewing. I liked this movie after reading the books. The movie was my gateway to the book series. The new series put out for TV has a lot more, true to the book events.
