Amazon.com Packed with more than 750 dazzling visual effects, this $70 million adventure does more (and less) than give the 1965-68 TV series a state-of-the-art face-lift. Aimed at an audience that wasn't born when the series originally aired, the sci-fi extravaganza doesn't even require familiarity, despite cameo appearances by several of the TV show's original cast members. Instead it's a high-tech hybrid of the original premise with enough sensory overload to qualify as a spectacular big-screen video game, supported by a time-travel premise that's adequately clever but hardly original. It's certainly never boring, and visually it's an occasionally awesome demonstration of special effects technology. But in its attempt to be all things to all demographics, the movie's more of a marketing ploy than a satisfying adventure, thankfully dispensing with the TV show's cheesy camp but otherwise squandering a promising cast in favor of eye-candy and ephemeral storytelling. --Jeff Shannon

Ho hum sci-fi movie February 28, 2010 Newton Ooi (Phoenix, Arizona United States) Outside of Star Trek, there are not that many sci-fi TV serials before Star Wars in 1977. Probably the most famous was Lost in Space, about a family of scientists - explorers who get lost in space. And like all famous TV shows, it was eventually made into a full-length feature film with updated special effects and more depth to the science. This one came out in 1998, and stars a cast full of well-known names such as William Hurt and Gary Oldman. I have never seen the original TV serial, so I cannot compare them, but I will say this was an alright movie. William Hurt was key to the movie as his demeanor and on-screen gravitas carried the script. Gary Oldman plays a good villian, and Heather Graham makes her only appearance in a sci-fi that I know of. The movie has some comedy, some action, and believable special effects. However, there were better sci-fi movies from the 1990's more worth your time; such as The Matrix and Dark City.
Lost in Space February 25, 2010 Kathryn Reno (HIGHLAND, CA, US) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had this movie on VHS and it is my all time favorite movie and when I tried to find it on dvd to purchase, I could not find it. My daughter suggested I try Amazon.com. Found it quickly and received it about three days from the time I bought it.
"I love you, wife" February 24, 2010 Amaranth (Northern California) "Lost in Space" is one of those awful "let's turn a campy sci-fi show into a high-tech futuristic action movies!" William Hurt stars as the catatonic Captain Robinson;his role is to speak drowsily and sleepwalk through the whole thing. He makes Han Solo in carbonite look far more exciting and emotional. Mimi Rogers, Tom Cruise's ex-wife,stars as the thankless housewife. Heather Graham is the daughter who flirts with Matt LeBlanc. There's an annoying Space Monkey,as well as an annoying little boy. Gary Oldman, far from his glory days as Sid Vicious in Sid and Nancy 30th Anniversary Edition,is the devious Dr. Smith.
"Lost in Space" moves at a snail's pace. The flirtation between Graham and LeBlanc is lame. Indeed,LeBlanc seems ill at ease... he'd rather be with his Friends - The Complete Series Collection, hangin' with Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox-Arquette. A sofa is more thrilling than this movie. William Hurt is far from his own glory days as a hot, passionate teacher in Children of a Lesser God who provides hands-on instruction. In his younger days, one would want to stand too close to him. William is not to be confused with John Hurt.
"Lost in Space" has some dumb plot devices involving time travel.... all very ludicrous, from Oldman's hamming to Hurt's catatonia. It does have one of the best lines in cinema. As Hurt holds Rogers,he passionlessly kisses her, intoning,"I love you, wife." Never has the sanctity of marriage been so protected and held up as in this film.
"I love you,wife."

Lost in Space (New Line Platinum Series) January 28, 2010 Arnita D. Brown (USA) The year is 2058. Most of the Earth's natural resources are virtually exhausted and will no longer support human life. The government decides that another planet shall be the human race's new home and the government begins construction of two "Hypergates" that will allow the human race to travel across space to the distant planet Alpha Prime. Government scientist Professor John Robinson, decides to set up a vital space mission. Along with his family: His wife Maureen, their children, oldest daughter, medical officer Judy, troubled teenage daughter, video technician Penny and their youngest son, gifted robotics expert Will and joined by heroic military fighter pilot Major Don West, John and his crew travels to Alpha Prime on-board the spaceship "Jupiter 2". But the traitorous Dr. Zachary Smith, working for terrorists known as the Seditions, uses the ship's robot and sabotages the mission and sends "Jupiter 2" off-course. But as Jupiter 2 is caught in the gravitational pull of the sun, John uses the ship's hyper-drive to escape. But John, his family and Major West learns that they've entered a uncharted part of the galaxy and they are lost in space. The story may be dull and the acting fairly mediocre, but Lost In Space isn't trying to be Solaris. It just wants to entertain, and no matter how much you try, you cannot truly say that this movie bores you.
