There are some filmmaking teams that invariably bring out the best in each other, and that's definitely the case with director Carroll Ballard and cinematographer Caleb Deschanel. They previously collaborated on The Black Stallion and Never Cry Wolf, and Fly Away Home is their third family film that deserves to be called a classic. Inspired by Bill Lishman's autobiography, the movie tells the story of a 13-year-old girl (Anna Paquin) who goes to live with her estranged, eccentric father (Jeff Daniels) following the death of her mother. At first she's withdrawn and reclusive, but finds renewed happiness when she adopts an orphaned flock of baby geese and, later, teaches them to migrate using an ultralight. Sensitively directed and stunningly photographed, the movie has flying sequences that are nothing short of astonishing, and Daniels and Paquin (Oscar winner for The Piano) make a delightful father-daughter duo. (Ironically, the digital video disc is not available in widescreen format, but the image quality is brilliant.) --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Great family movie   February 1, 2010
Haley Page (Chappell Hill, Texas United States)

    5 out of 5 stars A personal project   January 7, 2010
    Jack Rice (California, USA)
The quality of this movie -- cast, director, writers -- reflects the quality of producer John Veitch. Mr. Veitch, though his credits list is short, was actually one of the behind-the-scenes movers and shakers of Hollywood, as a studio executive with Columbia Pictures. He was also, by marriage, part of the Ladd clan. 1961's Misty, starring David Ladd, was the story a wild herd of "ponies" in their annual human-led "migration" between Assateague and Chincoteague Islands near the Virginia-Maryland border. Sound familiar? There's Igor the goose and Misty the pony, and the goal of the goose migration was North Carolina. Can there be any doubt that Bill Lishman's story evoked a feeling of dejà vu for John Veitch? This was Veitch's last movie and a tribute to a talented, kind and beloved man.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just A Family Movie   December 21, 2009
    YJM (Somewhere In The South)
As my title says, this movie is hardly just for families. Anyone of any age can appreciate this magnificent film. As far as I'm concerned this film catapults itself into instant classic, just like Bambi, Old Yeller, Benji, Lassie, or any of the classics that came before. There is not a bad performance in this film, not a wasted moment of celluloid, not a single bad line of script. It's simply a beautiful, touching, heart-felt, and most importantly real film. The movie touches on so many different things that I will let you discover them for yourself, as I imagine this movie will be important to people for different reasons.

I also must say Anna Paquin is a true revelation of her generation of actors. She is amazing in a sea of gen y mediocrity. She is delightful here, cute as a button (now a beautiful young woman), and already very accomplished at her young age. Jeff Daniels is his normal great self, never delivers a bad performance in anything he's been in. Dana Delany is also wonderful. The real stars of the movie are the geese, and they do steal the show! What graceful, majestic animals they are, presented in all of their dignified glory in this special movie. The music, oh yes the music, simply as beautiful as the film itself.

This is a must see movie as far as I'm concerned. It's rare when something this beautiful and honest comes out of Hollywood. But every now and then we get a Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, The Wrestler (Micky Roukes new movie), or Fly Away Home, and when we do we are reminded of the power of movies to profoundly affect us, emotionally, and spiritually.

5 out of 5 stars Fly Away Home   December 9, 2009
    David Briscoe (TULSA, OK, US)
I love movies based on real events. The story is fiction, but the fact that geese can be taught to follow an ultralight aircraft is in your face reality depicted in the movie. Teaching migrating birds new migration routs and destinations was the purpose of the original research, and was the same purpose in the film. The cinematography is excellent and so is the acting. Paquin and Daniels are A+ actors. This is a truly inspiring family movie.

5 out of 5 stars A Movie of Mixed Feelings   November 12, 2009
    Patrick (USA)
This movie is a great one. Has a slight bit of "Imprinting". I first watched this movie in science class ( I have NO idea why). But the first time I watched it. It must be bought on amazon video on demand! Should be made a classic. So I highly suggest buying this movie if you love Crying during a part of the movie. and Laugh at the same time. Also loving to fly. Its a must have to your collection of digital Library! 5 Of 5!
