Amazon.com After an obligatory prologue in which its detective hero suffers a tragic professional setback, Along Came a Spider sets about its business of luring the viewer into its nefarious plot, relying on the magician's technique of misdirection to reveal a double-whammy surprise. The clever, late-coming plot twist is a bit too mechanical but effectively unexpected, making this a satisfying prequel to the hit thriller Kiss the Girls--based on the first of James Patterson's Alex Cross detective novels--and a welcomed addition to a promising movie franchise. It's no better or worse than a good vintage episode of Peter Falk's Columbo, adhering closely to the mystery-thriller's time-honored traditions, but with Morgan Freeman settling comfortably into his role as seasoned sleuth Alex Cross, familiar formula is given fresh vitality. When a senator's daughter is kidnapped from her high-security private school, the kidnapper (nicely played by the underrated Michael Wincott) draws Cross into the case, knowing that the psychologist-detective's involvement will bring high-profile publicity. Cross partners with the Secret Service agent (Monica Potter) who botched her assignment, but wait... the movie's got a rabbit in its hat... and that rabbit has an ace up its sleeve... and director Lee Tamahori (who brought similar intensity to The Edge) handles the sleight-of-hand with slick precision, dispensing just enough information to keep the viewer off guard without resorting to cheap manipulation. Don't look for much depth of character here, but Along Came a Spider is well served by everyone involved. It's the movie equivalent of a bestseller you'd impulsively buy at the grocery-store checkout, and on those terms it succeeds. --Jeff Shannon

keep you guessing May 15, 2009 Carole Pankey keeps you at the end of your seat. ,keeps you guessing, sure different than the movie. what an ending
Average crime movie. April 30, 2009 Amber (Georgia) Good movie to watch, but not really all that engaging. I felt for some of the characters, and the plot was written fairly well--however, nothing about it grabbed me. I ended the film with no excitement, no fear, no feeling whatsoever, really. Not the worst movie I've ever seen, but not the best either.
Police Drama February 11, 2009 V. Baker (Augusta,Maine04330) A good movie with an excellent cast. Recommending this particular movie adult audience fans of both Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman.
Along Came A Spider February 9, 2009 Sharon Deane (Springfield, Mo.) This movie is exciting from the beginning to the end. I thought is was one of the best I have seen with Morgan Freeman. It holds your interest because it is fast paced and there is no lull in the middle because when the action starts you just want to keep watching to see what is going to happen next. I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes Morgan Freeman and lots of excitement.
Though not a masterpiece, a movie worth watching December 26, 2008 L Gontzes (Athens, Greece) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Along Came a Spider brings sheds light on detective Alex Cross as he tries to solve the snatching of a U.S. Senator's young daughter whose kidnapper seems to have a particular interest in him... Morgan Freeman is amazing in his respective role though the rest of the cast fail to follow with the exception of young Mika Boorem who seems to have quite a bit of potential. The setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the music are all good, but nothing extraordinary. In a nutshell, it's probably not a movie you would want to add to your collection, but it will provide for an evening's entertainment.
