Dvd, Mrs Winterbourne June 21, 2009 T. Lehman (Coldwater, MS USA) This is an older movie, but a really cute "Cinderella" type story. Brendan Frasier is awesome as usual and Ms. Lake is hilarious! Definitely worth watching.
Captivating Dark Comedy May 2, 2009 L. Wernicki (NY, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ricki Lake plays a homeless/destitute mother-to-be who is befriended by a family of wealth and importance once they believe her to be the widow of one of theirs who has perished in a train wreck. Brendan Fraser and Shirley Maclaine dominate as her "new family", with Brendan this time out playing the stronger-family-member comic role to perfection and Shirley this time out playing the anxious/comic mother responding with an outsized emotional reaction to every little thing her uptight son does. Fraser and Maclaine play a classic 1930's Hollywood comic duo to perfection and keep the film rolling at a sprightly pace until its unexpected ending. All in all an absolute delight even if Ricki Lake, a charismatic television personality in her own right, does not have the spectacular "superstar" comic flair of Fraser and Maclaine at their best. This is a filming of a novel entitled "I Married A Dead Man".
A Must Buy! March 12, 2009 C.C. Hausfrau (Youngstown, OH USA) This is by far one of my favorite flicks. Interesting, a love story, good acting by all makes this one of the best. It's a "rags to riches" story that includes all my favorite actors. Highly amusing - great late night fare with a tub of popcorn. But don't take my word for it, rent it, then buy it here.
if your into Romance Novels, and Sappy Romantic Comedies, you will love this! February 25, 2009 Constance Thomas We first rented this video, and overall loved the storyline. It was predictable as all Romantic comedies are, and a little sappy and unbelievable as all romance novels are. However it was still enjoyable. As a fan of Brendan Fraser, I have to say that as always, he's adorable in this movie. At first you hate is character, but by the end you love him. And despite the foul language coming from Ricky Lake's character, you fall in love with the fact that Brendan's character is still cute. I think the real reason that they inserted the bad language coming from her, was to stress the major class differences in each of them in the story. Thus said I do not agree with the bad language (this factor in the story makes it impossible to be a family movie)-but I do understand why they thought that they needed to put it in. The beginning is a little slow, and not that great, but the ending is classic, and perfectly adorable. I rate it a four and not a five simply due to the language. If not for that, it would have been a five with me. If you are considering, and have never seen this, rent it first, and screen it without the kids in the room. Cute overall storyline.
A Lake full of sewer water February 2, 2009 Phyllis J. Christa This is a cute story - but Ricki Lake's mouth turns it into sewage. What story line requires F - F - F and J C - seems like this was her attempt at adding dialog? her personal septic touch?
