Amazon.com If Brian De Palma directed Mission to Mars for 10-year-olds who've never seen a science fiction film, he can be credited for crafting a marginally successful adventure. Isolated moments in this film serve the highest purpose of its genre, inspiring a sense of wonder and awe in the context of a fascinating future (specifically, the year 2020). But because most of us have seen a lot of science fiction films, it's impossible to ignore this one's derivative plot, cardboard characters, and drearily dumb dialogue. Despite an awesome and painstakingly authentic display of cool technology and dazzling special effects, Mission to Mars is light years away from 2001: A Space Odyssey on the scale of human intelligence. After dispensing with a few space-jockey cliches, the movie focuses on a Mars-bound rescue mission commanded by Jim McConnell (Gary Sinise), whose team (Tim Robbins, Connie Nielsen, Jerry O'Connell) has been sent to retrieve the sole survivor (Don Cheadle) of a tragic Mars landing. During the sequence en route to Mars, De Palma's in his element with two suspenseful scenes (including a dramatic--albeit somewhat silly--space walk) that are technically impressive. But when this Mission gets to Mars, the movie grows increasingly unconvincing, finally arriving at an alien encounter that more closely resembles an astronomical CGI video game. But this is a $75 million Hollywood movie, and no amount of technical wizardry can lift the burden of a juvenile screenplay. Kudos to Sinise, his costars, and the special effects wizards for making the most of hoary material; shame on just about everyone else involved. --Jeff Shannon

Another nite of cocktails and MIssion to MArs. So this film starts out pretty .. the men are all hot and sort of fly boyish.. dam old school pilots are hot, ok enough I am being told to cool that off we will get to Top Gun volleyball later.. onto interesting things that deal with cocktails. I think that there was some sort of Zima or Sima I was confused. what is the deal with the infintiy symbol with skittles .. So here is what I have come up with to drink while watching this Film. SiMA skittles and vodak so you say you have never dabbled with your vodak and skittles its ok everyone is doing it look it up .. many pages on it. I dig the flick but mainly watched it with the subtitles on the script is funny and down right dirty. Ps the hair in this film is wonderful. If you want to send me your film or script I love to read . Next we Reveiw things to drink while watching Top Gun.
Entertaining movie April 30, 2009 M. C. Johnson (San Antonio, Texas United States) I enjoyed this movie because of the beautiful scenes of Mars. This movie only works if you can suspend your disbelief for a couple of hours and not take it so seriously. This is a great movie to watch on a large television in the dark with your boyfriend/girlfriend at your side.
Should have done better! March 29, 2009 Movieman (CA) With the budget and the largest set "ever" in British Columbia. Some !0 football field's over all. This film should have been a visual blockbuster. There could have been more camera angles to boast the expanse and isolation that DePalma was trying to get across. Some of the special effects were rotten and unrealistic. The great effects were ripped off of Kubrick's 2001.
Not a perfect movie but very worthwhile March 3, 2009 Al Kamieniecki (Nutley, NJ USA) I have read several reviews of this film, including the original Roger Ebert (whom I admire, and who is a huge sci-fi fan) review when the film was released to theaters. Many of them are are quite conflicted, they admire the special effects and the concepts involved, but have a hard time with the execution and dialogue. While I can see their points, I give this movie a fairly high rating because, although I recognize that it is imperfect, it presents a vision which is just as bold as "2001". Yes, there are a few errors in science, but fewer than many films. On the whole it is quite realistic. You can quibble with it's ideas but they are bold and at least theoretically possible. If you like your science fiction with a hard scientific edge this is very much that type of movie. The interactions of the NASA teams involved are quite within the realms of possibility. And there are some parts of the film which are quite emotionally stirring. Take a look at it...it's worth it.
Nice movie February 21, 2009 Glen Gomez (Milpitas, CA USA) I love this movie because show the near future, I hope we never need to pass for this kind of situation.
