Amazon.com essential video Though this movie did decent box-office business, it was never as funny as it should have been or as clever as it thought it was. The film is set behind the scenes at The Sun Also Sets, a soap opera starring Sally Field that is suffering a ratings slump. To lure the audience back, the producers resurrect a dead character, played by Kevin Kline, with whom Field was once a lover of but is now at odds (and helped exile to dinner theater, where he is first glimpsed playing Willy Loman). Written by Andrew Bergman and Robert Harling, the script has its funny moments but never manages to string them together, despite a cast that includes Whoopi Goldberg, Robert Downey Jr., Cathy Moriarty, and Carrie Fisher. --Marshall Fine

Underrated by critics February 6, 2010 Ms. Anonymous This movie is a lighthearted, fun, movie with wonderful actors. Critics panned this movie as "beneath" it's stars, but after all these years it is still one of my family's favorites.
Funniest Movie Of All Time October 26, 2009 Nocard (Vermont) In the same category as Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. If you've never seen this movie get it!!
so hilariously funny you'll cry October 14, 2009 Robin A. Swanson (Houston, Tx. USA) This movie is a laugh out loud film that will keep you in stitches throughout the entire story. The beloved main characters work together so well and each one makes you feel as though you really understand and before you know it, you are so caught up in the drama that you end up laughing your head off. Excellent for anyone who needs a good belly laugh.
Great film! July 4, 2009 Marilyn Morrow (Texas) This is, in my opinion, one of Sally Field's best. Her acting is brilliant, and makes the movie. Perfectly cast, funny, entertaining. You do NOT need to be a fan of soap operas to appreciate the humor!
One of the great romantic comedies November 18, 2008 Vickie R. Hoey Comedy is a dicey business. For some, it isn't funny unless it's current and political. To others it's all about how people get along together. Luckily, this movie gives everyone a chance to laugh. While this is a romantic comedy, with all of the usual "boy meets/rejects/gets rejected by/reunites with girl" plots, it is also a timeless look at the business of television, soap operas in particular. The only indication that this movie might not be current is the over-the-top 80s wardrobe.
Also, the cast certainly contributes to the experience. Just watching Robert Downey Jr., Sally Field, Carrie Fisher, Kevin Kline, Elizabeth Shue, Terry Hatcher, Whoopie Goldberg, Garry Marshall and Cathy Moriarty tear up the scenery is a complete treat.
You won't regret owning this one.
