Amazon.com Writer David Mamet created two engrossing and memorable characters, played by Alec Baldwin as the urbane fashion photographer and Anthony Hopkins as a reserved and intellectual billionaire. They find themselves teamed up against a giant Kodiak bear, and their own inner demons, when lost together in the Alaskan wilderness. There is a lot going on in this picture, as the subject matter includes male rivalry, the isolationism of extreme wealth, and, most conspicuously, the survival of the fittest. Mamet's script, which sounds a little too arch in spots, is well served by New Zealand director Lee Tamahori, who knows how to capture beauty and brutality in one frame. Although the themes are enormous in scope, they are well balanced. One rarely overpowers the other, nor does the achingly beautiful scenery overshadow the acting. Even if you do not like the intellectualism of the dialogue, there are some great scenes with the bear. --Rochelle O'Gorman

The Edge February 6, 2010 Arnita D. Brown (USA) Billionaire Charles Morse accompanies his supermodel wife Mickey to photo shoot at Alaska. The shoot is to be made by fashion photographer Robert Green. To find specific Indian for the shoot, they fly to even more distant location, where their small plane crashes into a lake. To survive in the woods full of man-killing bears they need each other, but the smarter of the men, Charles is suspicious that Robert is having an affair with his wife. This is a well written, well acted, well directed thriller. Anthony Hopkins as always turns in a great performance but the big suprise is Alec Baldwin who did just as well. This movie has some of the best dialogue ever written for a movie of this type, and the action scenes are clever with a blazingly paced. "The Edge" is a terrific movie.
Excellent wilderness footage but the script feels forced January 19, 2010 K. Swanson (Austin, TX United States) 3.7 stars
From reviews here I expected some hidden masterpiece. I respect Mamet and the two leads, so I couldn't wait to see this. Unfortunately, Mamet's script hampered my enjoyment of the glorious locales.
The problem for me is that the dialogue is far too stagey and theatrical at times. Hopkins and Baldwin are both very solid here, but their words often feel fake, especially when spoken against these most authentic wilderness backdrops. It all seems too pontificating at times, and the film was suspenseful only when they were fighting the bear. But even then, it was laughably theatrical; no way Hopkins kills that bear that quickly with a suddenly fashioned perfect spear. No way!
Still, there is lots of eye candy for nature lovers, and the occasional bon mot from Mamet, who is after all a very fine wordsmith. But I couldn't ever really let go into this movie; whenever I was about to, another out of place line would issue forth and I'd feel like I was watching a Broadway play, with all its inherent artifice, in the wilderness. And while that may sound interesting, it left me stuck between the two worlds and unable to enjoy either to the fullest.
Needs a better disc format! December 29, 2009 gruntledman A good action flick, but the "widescreen" is only 4:3 widescreen (Anamorphic widescreen is much better). The fine scenery deserves to be seen in Blu-ray.
Good Surprise Ending. December 14, 2009 Willy D. Reviewer (San Francisco,CA) Excellent script, excellent casting.
This movie demonstrates that you cannot out run a Grizzly, nor out climb, nor out swim this killer bear. This bear is the Great White Shark of Alaska.
I will not spoil the ending, but you don't have a clue till the last 10 minutes.
Buy new or used.
Outdoor Thriller December 9, 2009 William G. Dodson (Oklahoma City, Ok. USA) Have watched this movie a lot of times and still a great show, see something new every time from the plane crash to the bear attack to the deadfall. Anthony Hopkins is great to watch but Alec Baldwin needs to be slapped around some. All in all an A1 movie.
