5 out of 5 stars Mummy Collect A must have.   April 12, 2009
    Richard R. Draude (Tempe AZ)
I never saw these movies in the theater, nor did I see them on TV first. I heard from friends how good they were so when the boxed set showed up at Costco I purchased it. On my first available weekend I popped both movies and watched non stop for over four hours.
I wasn't a Brendan Fraser until I watched his portrayal of Rick O'Connell the adventurer. His mixture of bravery, bravado and comedy was great . Rachel Weisz plays Evee, the perfect intelligent air head to perfection. John Hannah's self centered character Jonathan, who always bumbles into to doing the right thing is timeless. Jonathan is someone you want to choke and hug at the same time.
I haven't seen any mention of Oded Fehr in the reviews. I throughly enjoyed his character Ardeth Bay as leader of the Magi. His shift in attitude toward Rich, Evee and Jonathan in the first movie is slow and grudgingly given. Ardeth's timely entrance to help the O'Connell's in the second installment, The Mummy Returns is expected and welcome. These are two movies that will remain enjoyable entertainment for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars In Hamunaptra, Terror lies underneath the Sand   February 25, 2006
Tyler Reece (burnsville, mn United States)
For 3,000 years the Majai have protected "the City of the Dead" to ensure that the high priest imoteph is to be never be awakened, for he will bring terror with him beyond any in Egypt. Universal Masterpieces these films are. Thrilling adventures with the suspense of the Boris Karloff original, spectacular ILM visual effects, great performances and suberb storytelling that makes these films unforgettable honoary Universal triumphs. Brenden Fraser makes a great adventure hero that hasn't seen like this since Indiana Jones, If love "the Mummy" and "the Mummy Returns" then see "Van Helsing" is just as great, Stephen Sommers is very good director and I'm excited for his next project, the legendary space hero "Flash Gordon" returns. Have these thrill following thrill adventures in your DVD library. "You have unleashed the creature we have feared for more than 3,000 years"

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful movies--incredible collection!!!!!   October 1, 2005

Stephen Somers did a fantastic job directing this movie! Somers take on The Mummy is set in the 1920's because, adds Somers, "...it's the most romantic era." The principal photography was set in Morocco in May 1998. Hamunaptra "The City of the Dead" was built near the Moroccan town of Erfoud. The set took sixteen weeks to be constructed. Also the visual effects in this movie are nothing short of amazing. Especially watching Imhotep slowly regenerate himself.
The story starts in Thebes "City of the Living", crown jewel of the pharaoh Sete the first, home of Imhotep (pharaoh's high priest), and the birthplace of Anck-su-namun (the pharaoh's mistress & Imhotep's true love). No man was to touch Anck-su-namun under the pharaoh's orders, but Imhotep risked life to be with the woman he loved. The pharaoh, who had discovered their betrayal, was killed by Imhotep & Anck-su-namun. Anck-su-namun killed herself so that Imhotep could resurrect her, but Imhotep suffered the Humn Di, the worst punishment. Never used because it was feared so. Imhotep was buried alive in his sarcophagus and locked with a key to make sure he would never arise.
In 1923 (3000 years later) Rick O'Connell and his army are in Hamunaptra fighting warriors and looking for treasure. It is there that Rick discovers that there is something evil lurking beneath the sand. But isn't sure yet what it is. Three years later in Cairo, Egypt we meet a young woman Evelyn ("Evie") who is a curator for the Museum of Antiquities, and her brother Jonathan. Jonathan has found a key with a map that will lead them to Hamunaptra, however when the map gets destroyed, they must go to Rick to help them find the lost city. In the process of proceeding to Hamunaptra, Rick discovers his old buddy Benny is leading the Americans to Hamunaptra in search of treasure. Once they get to Hamunaptra, the Americans find "The Book of the Dead", which gives life to the deceased. But Imhotep doesn't come alive until Evie reads the incantation. Imhotep slowly regenerates himself by killing. He sets out to find the sacred jars, the key, and "The Book of the Dead" so he can resurrect Ank-su-namun. And he's already chosen his human sacrifice, Evelyn. For Rick to save Evie, he has to find "The Book of Amun Ra", which takes life away, to make Imhotep mortal and kill him.
This movie has everything action, adventure, comedy, and romance. I haven't read much Ancient Egyptian since I was in school, so I don't know if there is any fact to this movie. Whether there is or there isn't, it's still a good movie to see. The cast all give exceptional performances. Brendan Fraser as Rick O'Connell, Arnold Vosloo as Imhotep, Rachel Weisz as Evie, John Hannah as Jonathan, Oded Fehr as Ardeth Bay, and Patricia Velasquez as Anck-su-namun, all who return for the sequel The Mummy Returns.
The sequel begins in Thebes 3067 B.C. where the Scorpion King and his army are fighting a battle to try to conquer the world. The battle lasted seven years until finally the Scorpion King was defeated and his army one by one perished in the desert of Am-Shere. Near death himself, the Scorpion King made a pact with the dark God Anubis to spare his life so he could conquer his enemies; in doing this he promised Anubis his soul. Anubis accepted his offer and spared his life, and gave the Scorpion King command of his army. However, when the Scorpion King defeated his enemies, Anubis took back command of his army and forced the Scorpion King to serve him always.
It is Egypt 1933, the Year of the Scorpion. Eight years have passed since Rick O'Connell killed the creature Imhotep, but now he's back joined by another desert warrior, The Scorpion King, who possesses powers beyond even the dreaded Imhotep. We join Rick, his wife Evie, and their young son Alex on a dig. Evie is having visions of the past and discovers in her past life she was the daughter of the pharaoh, Nefertiri, guardian of the bracelet of Anubis. Rick is a descendent of the Magi, the pharaoh's bodyguards, and their son Alex leads the way to Am-Shere.
In Hamunaptra "City of the Dead", men working for Anck-su-namun are digging up Imhotep's remains to resurrect him so he can defeat the Scorpion King. However, when they find out the O'Connell's have the bracelet of Anubis they travel to London to retrieve it so they can continue the procedure. During the raid of O'Connell manor, Evie gets kidnapped. Ank-su-namun and her men take the chest that had the bracelet inside, but what they don't know is Alex has on the bracelet. The bracelet is the guide to the lost oasis of Am-Shere, the resting place of Anubis' army. From the time Alex puts the bracelet on he has seven days to reach the pyramid on that very morning or the bracelet will suck the life out of him. In seven days the Scorpion King will awaken, take command of Anubis' army, and take over the world. Whoever can kill the Scorpion King can send his army back to the underworld or use it to destroy mankind.
While escaping from rescuing Evie, Alex is kidnapped by Lock-Nah, and is delivered to Imhotep and Anck-su-namun. Where Imhotep tells Alex of the bracelet and its curse. Imhotep tells Alex that he must lead him to Am-Shere or he will die. Rick, Evie, and Ardeth Bay follow Imhotep and his men to Carnac to find Alex. Instead they find sandcastles Alex made of the Temple Island of Philai, and the Great Temple of Arusa Mal, clues to where Imhotep is headed. They eventually make it to Am-Shere where Rick rescues Alex, and rushes him into the pyramid just as the sun is coming up. It is just as Rick and Alex have made it into the pyramid that Ank-su-namun kills Evie by stabbing her. Rick goes on to defeat Imhotep and the Scorpion King leaving Alex in the care of Jonathan. Ardeth Bay and the Magi prepare to fight the army of Anubis. Jonathan carries Evie's body into the pyramid while Alex reads from "The Book of the Dead" to bring her back to life. Evie, as Nefertiri, battles Ank-su-namun while the Scorpion King battles with Rick and Imhotep. Rick kills the Scorpion King by throwing The Spear of Osiris through him. In doing so, he also kills the army of Anubis. Rick and Imhotep are both hanging by the edge below a pool of demons. During this the pyramid starts to break apart. Evie runs through the falling rocks to save Rick, and they escape. Ank-su-namun runs into a pile of flesh eating bugs, and Imhotep falls into the pool below. The Oasis of Am-Shere is destroyed and Rick, Evie, Alex, and Jonathan fly back home to England.
The sequel brings back all the main players from the original cast and introducing The Rock as The Scorpion King. Again, all the characters gave wonderful performances, and the storyline was brilliant. This is one set you can't go without!

These movies are so great. They make you want to wet your pants in some parts from fright and sometimes in laughter. Having them both in a nice case is a great way to display them to the world. Also, make sure you watch them and then go to Universal Studios Hollywood and go through the maze. I wanted to cry the whole way through because the movies made the maze so life like.
