Amazon.com essential video This strange, 1985 experiment by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner) starred the up-and-coming Tom Cruise in a fairy-tale world of dwarfs and unicorns and demons. After the horn of a unicorn is broken, darkness and winter descend upon the world. Cruise's character, helped along by a magic sprite played by David Bennent (The Tin Drum), descends into hell to save paradise. This movie is almost a classic case of art direction gone amok. The somewhat amorphous Cruise doesn't lend much dramatic focus or artistic definition, but the drama between Tim Curry's satanic majesty and Mia Sara's character, who becomes a sort of princess of the netherworld, is pretty captivating. A mixed experience all around that makes one wish it had been more successful. --Tom Keogh

Tangerine Dream MAKES The Movie! February 7, 2010 Bob God (Summerland Key, USA) Five stars for the inclusion of the original movie that everyone fell in love with.
I've worn out three VHS copies and am jazzed to finally have it on DVD.
I have also had the CD of the soundtrack for many years and cuts from it are on a variety of my iPod play lists.
The score by Tangerine Dream is what MAKES the movie!
I could have done without the director's cut. The score doesn't come close to capturing the spirit of the story or scenery; it sounds like a cartoon.
Appalling in their absence are the songs "Is Your Love Strong Enough" and "Touched By the Sun."
Again, however, the REAL movie is included in this set, so it's easy to just ignore the existence of the butchered version with the wrong music.
Too long version February 3, 2010 Bancolombia Clasica (colombia , south america)
i saw this movie just one time, i dont dare to put it again in my player , it`s so long that becomes really boring, talking is always extended and kind of poetic too much for me.
Legend January 30, 2010 B. Chan This is not Tom Cruise finest work. If you like fantasy movies then it's worth your time and money, otherwise save your money. I gave it 3 stars because of the superb acting from Tim Curry the Devil. Really like the Devil's character.
Not the version you are expecting. January 24, 2010 maninblue (Cudahy, WI United States) I was sadly disappointed to find out that the only version included in this DVD is the Director's Cut. There is no option to even try to watch the theatrical release. The problem here is that the theatrical release that we have all come to know and love was very different from the original cut from Ridley Scott. For example, the theatrical release had a score created by Tangerine Dream which I thought was perfect. Also, there are many instances where the dialog is different in such a way that it changes the whole feel and flow of the film. The director's cut uses the score by Jerry Goldsmith, but apparently Goldsmith and Ridley Scott had some sort of falling out and Goldsmith's music was never used. Some might say the Goldsmith's score is better, but I disagree. I cannot stand the Director's Cut and nowhere does this product inform you that this unusual version is all you will get. The back of the DVD case does mention that it "includes" the Director's Cut, but I didn't know when I bought the thing that its not talking about bonus features, but rather what you are limited to.
Paint-by-numbers fantasy genre entry January 18, 2010 One-Line Film Reviews (Easton, MD) The Bottom Line:
Tim Curry (and his incredible makeup/costume artists) makes for a pretty good antagonist but Tom Cruise is a blank as the lead and the whole story feels like someone took the odds and ends from better stories and mashed them together to make a film the world didn't need; the film has acquired a cult around it, no doubt helped by the fact that it was directed by Ridley Scott, but Legend really isn't worth your time.
