Amazon.com In the first and finest RoboCop movie, director Paul Verhoeven combined near-future science fiction with a keen sense of social satire--not to mention enough high-velocity violence to satisfy even the most voracious bloodlust. In Starship Troopers, Verhoeven and RoboCop cowriter Ed Neumeier take inspired cues from Robert Heinlein's classic sci-fi novel to create a special-effects extravaganza that functions on multiple levels of entertainment. The film might be called "Melrose Place in Space," with its youthful cast of handsome guys and gorgeous women who look like they've been recruited (and in some cases they were) from the cast of Beverly Hills 90210. Viewers might focus on the incredible, graphically intense action sequences (definitely not for children) in which heavily armed forces from Earth go to off-world battle against vast hordes of alien "bugs" bent on planetary conquest. The attacking bugs are marvels of state-of-the-art special-effects technology, and the space battles are nothing short of spectacular. But Starship Troopers is more than a showcase for high-tech hardware and gigantic, flesh-ripping insects. Recalling his childhood in Holland during the Nazi occupation, Verhoeven turns this epic adventure into a scathingly funny satire of fascist propaganda, emphasizing Heinlein's underlying warning against the hazards of military conformity and the sickening realities of war. It's an action-packed joy ride if that's all you're looking for, but Verhoeven has a provocative agenda that makes Starship Troopers as smart as it is exciting. The DVD includes an above-average commentary by the director and Neumeier, several deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes documentary and promotional featurette, cast bios, production notes, and more. --Jeff Shannon

Starship Troopers June 15, 2009 Dominic (Southern California) This film may be hokey, but it's still a good movie. One of the last films Paul Verhoeven has done in America, was a good one to be remembered by. He uses a great use of Sci-Fi and propaganda that he was subjected to in his native Holland during WWII, and of course, his good use of gratuitous graphic violence is always a plus. This film also broke ground in the progress of CGI, considering that they had less then half of the overrated Titanic did at only $90 million, it did a great job. Of course the acting feels labored at times, or all the time, and the cast seems like they just came off the set of Beverly Hills 90210, but that's what was intended. It was supposed to be these hot young newcomers, being sent off into a war and environment that they underestimated. "Everything is all fun and games until reality comes into play" And if you look past the propaganda, and themes of Socialism and the satire of it all, it is still the one of the best Sci-Fi B-Movie made.
strarship troopers May 13, 2009 Donna Young (USA) Excellent movie if you are a true sci-fi buff. Excellent grafics and story line. This is a must for your sci-fi video library.
Excellent B Movie April 21, 2009 S. Krishna (U.S.A.) This is a review of the first movie of Starship Troopers. Excellent parity of war and governments. Ironically it came out before the Iraq war. Dina Meyer was nice enough to show her top in a coed shower. Just wish Denise Richards did not wait till later movies to show her top.
Good movie but a lot could be improved February 5, 2009 Winston (Canada) Having watched this movie tens of times I am now an expert on every scene and one liners of this movie. The acting is mediocre but the script makes it all the best and enjoyable. It's an exciting movie. I've been a fan ever since it came out in late 1990s. There are also a lot of goofs in it for instance when Rico is injured and Carmen (Denise Richards) searches for his name on the screen she says I am surprised there are no wounded and then her colleague/mate says "Bugs don't take PRISONERS". She was talking about wounded while a lot of them were shown on that shot any ways. The director could be a lot more careful with those stuff. This is a sci-fi movie with the technological advantages of 1990s. I enjoy it every time I watch it.
The movie, not the book.... February 3, 2009 Samuel E. Barker (INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI United States) This review is for this great action packed movie. Not for the idiots that try to judge it against the book. The graphics are great as well as the action. It has a super story that makes the movie a big hit. If you want to read a review on the book, then go to the book and read the seperate reviews for it. This is a review for the movie on dvd since that is where you are at, here at amazon.
