Amazon.com An underrated little picture, Real Genius offers a rare college comedy that doesn't rely on gross-out humor--and a look at Val Kilmer before he turned into a star. A high school whiz kid (Gabriel Jarret) arrives at a brainy college, where the crème de la crème of the science students are marshaled under an ambitious professor (expert villain William Atherton). Unbeknownst to them, the kids are working on a weapons system that the prof plans on selling to the government. The star student, and chief rabble-rouser, is played by Kilmer, in good early form as a cocky genius who hasn't lost touch with his goofy side. The director is Martha Coolidge, whose Valley Girl was one of the brightest (and most unexpected) of '80s comedies; she keeps the movie perking along and never worries about dumbing down a film that just happens to be about smart people. --Robert Horton
Product Description When a group of college geniuses discover that their professor has them working on a secret weapon for the military, they set out to get revenge. Genre: Feature Film-Comedy Rating: PG Release Date: 1-JAN-2007 Media Type: DVD

Uninteresting. March 2, 2010 JR (Philadelphia, PA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This movie is about a pair of know-it-all collegiate students, one slightly more effeminate than the other, who figure out a way to fill a house with popcorn. I thought the entire plot was preposterous. I can't say I really identify with this movie or its characters.
Great and goofy '80s fun, but the hyper girl deserved more credit January 18, 2010 E. M. Van Court (Honolulu, Hawai'i, USA) A fifteen year old gets snapped up for a college scholarship in a physics program. Along the way, he meets a girl who never sleeps, a suck-up nerd, the last child protegy that had cracked under the stress, a nerd who's moved past the intensity and back into having fun, and a professor who is deep in the pockets of the DoD. When he and his friends realize the laser project they're working on is a key component of a very dark classified program, they decide to keep a super weapon out of military hands and pay back the professor that was exploiting their work.
Val Kilmer was brilliant as the nerd who had decided to start having fun, and William Atherton was exceptional as the professor who was trying to scam the DoD with his students efforts. Our hero's girlfriend, played by Michelle Meyrink, is hyper and goes through moods faster than most people go through tissues. Her charm pulled together a story that could have devolved into the most trite string of cliches. This was an incredible performance, and never got a fraction of the credit it deserves.
Great fun flick, grab the popcorn and see Val Kilmer at his best, and some of the best comedy of the '80s.
E. M. Van Court
Great Movie December 26, 2009 Marie G. If you haven't seen it, buy it, rent it, whatever. This is a great geeky movie.
Real Genius September 4, 2009 Charlotte Brummett (Bellville, Texas) This movie is and has been a great movie ever since it first came out. And when I found it on Amazon.com I just had to get it. We watch it quite often. It has made a nice addition to our movie collection.
80's classic August 3, 2009 Max Edwards (Nashville, Tennessee United States) Here is another classic college movie from the 80's. My only complaint is that my copy is in stereo and not surround.
