    Editorial Reviews:

    Amazon.com essential video
Steven Spielberg's 1982 hit about a stranded alien and his loving relationship with a fatherless boy (Henry Thomas) struck a chord with audiences everywhere, and it furthered Spielberg's reputation as a director of equally strong commercial sensibilities and classical leanings. Henry Thomas gives a strong, emotional performance as E.T.'s young friend, Robert MacNaughton and Drew Barrymore make a solid impression as his siblings, and Dee Wallace is lively as the kids' mother. The special effects almost look a bit quaint now with all the computer advancements that have occurred since, but they also have more heart behind them than a lot of what we see today. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars my wife loved it   March 7, 2010

I got this as a Christmas present for my wife she loved it. The two versions of the film and the booklet have had here attention for hours.

5 out of 5 stars ET - Still a classic after all these years.   February 23, 2010
    MovieGuy (Cleveland OH)
ET - The Extra Terrestial is still a classic film. I have seen ET at least 5 times before. You can easily see Spielberg's feelings for his characters. ET is an alien but he is one of the good guys. Later in his career, Spielberg would show the "evil" aliens in "War of the Worlds".

For now, sit back and enjoy ET one more time. Bravo!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best movies ever made, with a wonderful soundtrack   January 29, 2010
Gregory N. Perkins (Frankfort, KY USA)
I am old enough(barely)to remember the first release of "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" back in 1982. I was four years old, and on vacation with my family to see my aunt in Baytown, Texas. It was the first movie I ever saw in a theatre, and I remain thankful for having seen this on a big screen at a young age.

Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Henry Thomas, Drew Barrymore and Robert MacNaughton, the movie tells the story of the unlikely friendship between a young boy named Elliott and an alien. That is a very rough outline, but the ingeniousness of the movie is the emphasis of the deep need for connection and understanding between people. Elliott is loved, but frustrated by an absentee father and the typical harrassments of an older brother named Michael, played well by Robert MacNaughton. Additionally, Elliott must contend with the responsibility of occasionally looking after his younger sister Gertie, played by a very young and endearing Drew Barrymore. E.T. unceremoniously lands in Elliott's life and care after being unintentionally stranded on Earth by his kind, and the flowering of their relationship remains one of the most moving in the history of popular film.

All of the younger actors in this movie give exceptional performances, but Henry Thomas' Elliott remains among the best child performances ever put on film. Mr. Thomas plays Elliott as if he were a genuine boy, and naturally elicits sympathy and believability.

Also featuring a superlative soundtrack by the great film composer John Williams(the "Star Wars", "Indiana Jones" and "Harry Potter" film series'), and impressive visual effects punctuated by a couple of famous bicycle flights, "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" is a great classic film that I never tire of watching. (And yes, I did cry at the end, all those years ago).

    5 out of 5 stars E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial (Full Screen Edition)   January 23, 2010

While visiting the Earth at Night, a group of alien botanists is discovered and disturbed by an approaching human task force. Because of the more than hasty take-off, one of the visitors is left behind. The little alien finds himself all alone on a very strange planet. Fortunately, the extra-terrestrial soon finds a friend and emotional companion in 10-year-old Elliot, who discovered him looking for food in his family's garden shed. While E.T. slowly gets acquainted with Elliot's brother Michael, his sister Gertie as well as with Earth customs, members of the task force work day and night to track down the whereabouts of Earth's first visitor from Outer Space. The wish to go home again is strong in E.T., and after being able to communicate with Elliot and the others, E.T. starts building an improvised device to send a message home for his folks to come and pick him up. But before long, E.T. gets seriously sick, and because of his special connection to Elliot, the young boy suffers, too. The situation gets critical when the task force finally intervenes. By then, all help may already be too late, and there's no alien spaceship in sight. This is a movie made for children and it achieves this brilliantly. A very heart warming and emotional movie. Sheer Brilliance.
