Amazon.com Start spreadin' the news... Jason Voorhees, the cleaver-hoisting man in the hockey mask, has finally left Crystal Lake behind and taken his vagabond shoes to the Big Apple. Actually, Jason spends most of his time on a cruise ship bound for Manhattan, carving up the unluckiest high school graduation party ever. You'd think the change of scenery might breathe new life, or death, into the series, but chapter 8 is standard stalk 'em and slash 'em fare, albeit with a nautical slant. The title hints at a comic tone, but except for the one-joke idea that Jason fits right into the menacing urban scene, forget it. (The comedy would wait until the surprisingly entertaining Jason X.) This one does have a pretty leading lady, Jensen Daggett, whose visions of the young drowned Jason are occasionally creepy. The grown-up Jason, like "these little-town blues," is melting away. --Robert Horton

A "Worst Film of the F13 Franchise" Candidate May 6, 2009 C. Sawin (TX) A group of students are taking a cruise to New York. A couple, who's part of the group, ventures off on their own in their own private boat. They wind up drifting through Camp Crystal Lake for a little quality time together. They set anchor and wind up resurrecting Jason in the process. Now as the cruise ship sets off, with Jason in tow, our students may have more than their biology projects to worry about. Re-watching this was not a pleasant experience. I really had to force myself to watch it and once I finally did it was almost painful to make myself sit through the entire thing. Continuity is probably the film's biggest flaw. When we see young Jason drown, he looks like a normal little boy. Whenever Rennie sees him, however, he suddenly looks like he has down syndrome and like somebody beat him with a 2x4 made from every ugly branch they could get a hold of. On top of that, he pretty much has a different appearance every time Rennie sees him. Then there's the whole Crystal Lake leading into the ocean thing and the ending. Heavens, the ending is just a cluster of retardism. The script isn't so hot either. Julius is probably the best example. After Wayne asks him what weapon he's going to take after they realize Jason is on the ship, Julius replies, "Nothing," then pauses for a moment before following with, "...but this gun." The kills were also lacking. Jason takes a guitar to a girl's head and throws a guy onto an antenna. That's about as inventive as we get this time around. The one enjoyable factor of the film is Kane Hodder as Jason. The scene in Times Square is probably the highlight of the film. It's disappointing that the last film with "Friday the 13th" in the title is so bad. Rating - 2/10
JASON ON VACATION!? MISLEADING TITLE! April 15, 2009 ! MR. KNOW IT ALL ;-b (TRI STATE AREA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am writing reviews for each of the Friday the 13th, but I own the box set and the older releases of the later two. The reviews are for those editions not the newer deluxe editions. What could have been an interesting entry in the series is one of the worst installments. The title is very misleading as Jason is only in "The Big Apple" for the last few minutes. With so many of the films taking place in the woods, it could have been a breath of fresh air to have Jason in Manhattan for most of the film. Regardless, this film is so bad, it's hysterical! The DVD transfer is good and this is the last of the films to be included in the box set.
Better than most of the series April 5, 2009 CocoBeware (USA) Not terrible, not great. It's basically another Friday the 13th movie. Interesting twist that Jason is finally not at Crystal Lake.
Love it! March 21, 2009 marky77 (England) LOVED it!! Ignore bad reviews, this is the best sequel since part four! Lots of suspence and gore and some of Jasons most creative kills are in this movie, too. The idea of putting Jason on a cruise ship (and then later in New York) was a brilliant idea as it allowed for more creativity and gave the movie a lot of origionality. Good character development and we see Jason as he was as he drowned in the lake as the main character has a connection with Jason from her childhood. Highly recomended - suspence, gore, good death scene and characterisation and a killer ending - one of the best in the series!.
From Crystal Lake to Manhattan? Not happening ! February 18, 2009 Chris T Look it, this was the decline of the F13th films in my book, I loved this series (maybe not part 5 no Jason and all) I think the real issue I have with this film and there are many as facts and time lines do not add up on this Flick is this There is no way possible he is catching a ship of any size from Crystal lake to Manhattan. The best I can figure it Crystal lake is supposed to be somewhere between Stanhope and Andover NJ. This is the facts that lead me to this, in part 1 when cooking girl walks in to the dinner to ask how far to camp crystal lake she is told about 20 miles. She catches a lift from an oil truck driver which has Stanhope NJ on the side. Later in the film the wooden post reads Crystal lake 12 miles or something and Lake Tomahawk 25 miles, Lake Tomahawk is around Andover NJ. There are several lakes in the area of Stanhope and Andover which could be the fictional Crystal lake ( not to mention there are several lakes in North Jersey that go by Crystal lake. Non of these lakes by what I know have a water way that drains off in to the Hudson, or the Delaware river. I find it irritating when Movies insult our intelligence or they do not do their research before making a film, if any one has a thought on how he was supposed to get to NY I would love to hear it :) Still cant wait to see the New F13 2009 re image
