Product Description AN ORPHAN GOES TO LIVE WITH HIS FREE-SPIRITED AUNT. CONFLICT ENSUES WHEN THE EXECUTOR OF HIS FATHER'S ESTATE OBJECTS TO THE AUNT'S LIFESTYLE.
Amazon.com Remember darlings, "Life's a banquet, and most suckers are starving to death." That tag line sums up this exuberant and immensely amusing 1958 comedy that can be seen repeatedly, as it never grows stale. Rosalind Russell plays the flamboyant aunt who takes in poor, orphaned Patrick, played with sophisticated ease by Jan Handzlik. Mame, all glitter and martinis, raises her nephew in a world filled with acceptance and her oddball literati friends. Nothing is too bohemian. This unfolds in colorful episodic segments that allow us to watch Patrick grow as Mame oversees his unusual upbringing while she juggles a few spouses and an extended household. Russell, who created the title role for the stage, simply shines. She is bright and brassy, but never goes too far over the top. Peggy Cass is a comedic delight as her befuddled secretary, and Coral Browne brings class to the production as her best friend. This was based on the exuberant stage play, which in turn was based on Patrick Dennis's humorous, bittersweet novel. The screen version was written by the clever duo of Betty Comden and Adolph Green. Not to be confused with the pathetically lackluster musical version starring Lucille Ball (1974), simply entitled Mame. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Auntie Mame February 6, 2010 Bonnie Bookworm (Reynoldburg, OH) I accidentally caught this movie on TV years ago. I howled with laughter - I had never seen Rosiland Russell in a wonderful comedic role. The movie is one of the few movies that is as good or better than the book by Patrick Dennis. This movie is just plain fun - don't miss the southern hunt with Auntie Mame's beau.
Oldie but goodie! February 3, 2010 Bobbi R. Swan (Clinton Township, Michigan (near Detroit)) It was a very long time ago for sure -- but I remember both the Broadway show and this movie. It's Rosalind Russel at her very best -- the memory of her is best with this fine production. I found it a great gift to pass on to a very special grandson at Christmaa!

I love Auntie Mame December 23, 2009 Ed in MA. (Needham, MA. USA) I've watched this movie many times and I still enjoy the humor, warmth and style of Rosalind Russell and Auntie Mame. A must watch
Live Live LIVE - Auntie Mame is a CLASSIC Hollywood Romp and Inspiration for Every Woman December 9, 2009 April Braswell (Las Vegas, NV) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Even back in college at Smith, the seniors made reference the faux book which Mame was writing in their Senior Last Will and Testament to Rest of the Dorm when they cited the phrase, Live, Live, LIVE!
Auntie Mame was originally a Broadway show, with Rosalind Russell as the original and defining actress to play the role of Auntie Mame. 1970s Game Show Fans will recognize Agnes Guch, Peggy Cass. FTroup fans from the 1970s TV show comedy will recognize Forrest Tucker not realizing he started as a film actor.
Auntie Mame is one of my all time favorite movies, and YES, I had to OWN it not just rent it periodically from Netflix. When I am in a relationship and want to qualify the man as a Life Partner, are we aligned in our Life Values, we trot out and watch "Auntie Mame" as a discussion point around the kind of stimulating and FUN kind of Life I desire to live.
