Following the flop of Little Nicky, Adam Sandler returned to safe territory in Mr. Deeds... and made Nicky look inspired by comparison. A loose remake of Frank Capra's 1936 classic Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, this dumbed-down version finds Sandler in the Gary Cooper role, inheriting a vast fortune and a corporate empire, foiling a greedy executive (Peter Gallagher), and winning the heart of an undercover reporter (Winona Ryder) who's been mocking his small-town naivete in print while falling for his goodhearted sincerity. It's fun enough to satisfy Sandler's loyal fans--and John Turturro's a hoot as Deeds's foot-fetishist butler--but the subtleties of Capra are lost on Sandler, director Steven Brill, and writer Tim Herlihy. While Gary Cooper portrayed a rube who was savvy about big-city cynicism, Sandler's an amiable goofball with a heart of gold and an empty skull. You can admire him, and parts of the movie (including Steve Buscemi's unbilled cameo), but you have to work harder to get there. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Longfellow Deeds is one lucky guy...   May 7, 2009
    Eric S. Kim (Southern California)
Basically, good-hearted Longfellow Deeds (Sandler) is the heir to his uncle's mansion, and he moves from New Hampsire to New York City, where the mansion is clearly located. Winonda Ryder is Babe Bennett, a reporter who disguises herself in order to get a good story for the tabloids.

I wouldn't say that this Sandler comedy is as great as, say, Billy Madison or The Waterboy. It is actually lighter in tone, and has a more delicate storyline. It's still a good comedy, though, just not as funny as the older Sandler flicks. It's more of a heartfelt experience rather than a laugh-out-loud comedy. It makes you feel good when it ends. That's not necessarily a bad thing: I prefer happy endings when it comes to comedies.

I give this a B. It's a good, but not great, movie from Sandler.

3 out of 5 stars packaging is a little ghetto...   March 15, 2009

im pretty sure i bought a 'used' condition of this dvd, but i was hoping the packaging would be a little more sturdy. i had hoped to give it as a present but since it looked a little flimsy i opted to buy a new copy of the dvd for the gift, and kept this one for myself. haven't watched it yet, hopefully it's not scratched!

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Deeds   March 1, 2009
    Linda L. Wilson (Clearwater, Fl.)
Adam Sandler puts on his usual marvelous performance as a small town man who suddenly is the head of a huge corporation and millions of dollars. His antics are tremendously funny since, in a small town they wouldn't be even noticed, but in his position, he is in the limelight and everything is distorted into something larger than life and fed to the public. Even his love life is put up for review. A must- see picture.

4 out of 5 stars Very Funny!!!   February 7, 2009
    PUMPKIN MAN
Adam Sandler does another awesome and hilarious job as Longfellow Deeds. Deeds owns a pizza place and writes greeting cards in a small town. He soon inherits 40 billion dollars from his dead uncle. A reporter named Babe Bennett tries to get close to him to get a story. She soon finds out that he is a really sweet guy and doesn't want to continue doing her story because her boss takes her camera and alters Deeds to look like a bad guy, and she feels really bad about it. When he finds out, he gets rid of his money and moves back to his town. He also finds out that the company is about to be sold, so he appears at a shareholders meeting ands tries to stop it. I also like the character, Emilio Lopez because he just appears out of nowhere. I highly recommend MR. DEEDS!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Hilarious, with a heart   December 20, 2008

Yeah OK it's Hollywood, it's predictable, and it's typical Sandler stuff. But so what; it's also hilarious! Of course if you don't like typical Adam Sandler humor then you may not like "Deeds", but I just busted up laughing in many parts of this movie. And sometimes that's what we need, a really good hearty laugh. Plus, the character Deeds is a really decent, innocent-hearted (but not naive) man. How many movies are about men like that? So besides the humor, there's the uplifting and encouraging character of Deeds the uncorruptible, non-materialistic, non-selfish man.

I suppose it's like "School of Rock", which I also found hilarious. Either this movie will strike a chord with you, or it won't. Even so, there are other funny characters in here, played by Steve Buscemi and John Turturro. Sandler fan or not, you're likely to get some good laughs here. It's worth a try, and if you end up not liking it then I assure you there are far worse movies you could waste your time on.
