As a more conventional follow-up to his innovative thriller Memento, Christopher Nolan's Insomnia offers ample proof that his skills are genuine. A superbly crafted remake of the 1997 Norwegian thriller, this moody police procedural is transplanted to a remote Alaskan town, where a veteran Los Angeles detective (Al Pacino) arrives to investigate the murder of a teenaged girl. Professional tragedy collides with psychological turmoil as the detective suffers from sleeplessness under the region's perpetual daylight, and a local rookie cop (Hilary Swank) begins to suspect that truths are being hidden as the disturbing case unfolds. While the Alaskan setting intensifies the atmospheric mystery, Pacino's bleary-eyed disorientation adds a rich layer to his character's erratic behavior, and the casting of Robin Williams as the killer was a risk that pays off nicely. INSOMNIA is a fantastic thriller, full of twists, turns, and arctic-cold atmosphere. Al Pacino (The Godfather 1 and 2, Scarface, Heat, etc.) is LA homicide detective Will Dormer, sent to Nightmute, Alaska to investigate a murder. Will has a lot of professional / personal baggage that complicates matters, causing him to hide his own secrets while trying to solve the crime. Add to this the fact that he's arrived in northern Alaska during it's season of perpetual daylight, and he's got major sleeping problems as well! Between the murder case, the eternal daylight, and Will's own conscience, he quickly becomes a mess! It's amazing that he can still function at all, let alone, well. Hilary Swank (The Gift, 11:14) is a young officer who assists Dormer, only to find her own loyalties and sense of justice challenged. Robin Williams (One Hour Photo, The Night Listener) plays a seemingly mild-mannered sociopath whose one frantic desire is to cover / save his own a$$! INSOMNIA succeeds at building tension while showing Will Dormer's mental disintegration. A classic crime drama w/ something extra. Loaded w/ memorable scenes like the chase-in-the-fog, chase-across-the-floating-logs, and invisible-oncoming-truck sequences, INSOMNIA holds up well after many repeat viewings. Highly recommended... P.S.- Watch for both Katherine Isabelle and Emily Perkins from the GINGER SNAPS movies, as the victim's best friend and the eulogizer at her funeral respectively...

I lived in Alaska for 3 years, so I have to say what a crappy telling of the enviroment. The story was not good either, and I love Pacino and Williams, but are you serious? The inacuracy of the temperature for the time of year that they were dipicting is ridiculous. When it is the longest day of the year in Alaska, which is June 22nd if you did not know, the temperature is actually WARM! Do not fall for the stereo type of Alaska being snow covered and cold year round, because it is not. They do have permafrost, but that does not cause your breathe to be cold and seen on screen. I need a jacket when it should be 70 degrees outside. What are you trying to do? I was so bothered by this, and if Alaska were just the backdrop, that would be one thing, but it is actually the "trickster" of the movie by playing havoc on Al Pacino and his sleep. Also, it would not be that difficult to block out the light. Everyone that lives there has figured it out, why would someone just visiting not be able to find a room with real shades. Not those cheap Wal-Mart dollar Ninty-nine speacials. Horrible. And Now to the story. Unbeleivable in ever sense of the word. Fiction takes somes liberties, but are you serious? Robin Williams is a great dramatic actor, so that wasnt the probalem. It was the character that he was forced to try to become. I "accidently" killed her? Don't forget about the "wild Card"? Without giving this movie away, let me just save you some time. Do not rent this. Do not buy this. I watched it on demand, and I feel like i was robbed still. DO NOT WATCH THIS HORRIBLE INACURATE MOVIE!
Pretty Fair Remake March 7, 2009

Actually I rate this 4.5 stars. Christopher Nolan has done well with his second major project. The use of the beautiful Alaskan scenery and contrasting man made structures, trash, and litter is amazing. Pacino gives his usual strong performance and we've come to expect the same from Miss Swank. Robin Williams again proves that comedians are more at home in a dramatic role than many serious actors in a comedy. A well done remake of an excellent foreign film.
Good Acting Elevates This 'Sleeper' February 24, 2009

Al Pacino's acting once again is a highlight of a film he's in. He has the capacity to dominate a film with his presence. In this re-make of the Norwegian film, Pacino is excellent as a good-yet-tainted policeman who starts to unravel after not sleeping for four or five days. The Alaskan summer, with light 24 hours of day, can do that to visitors
Robin Williams, meanwhile, plays a killer. It's funny how comedians can do so well playing dramatic roles and Williams is a prime example. He's especially good at creepy nut-cases (See "One Hour Photo") Williams doesn't enter the movie until about halfway through and he's fascinating in a low-key role (until the end).
For a modern-day crime film, this doesn't have a lot of action but that's fine if the acting is this good and the story involving. Here, the acting is better than the story. Kudos to Hillary Swank, too, for her performance as the cop.
The Alaskan scenery ain't bad, either.

I bought this movie from this website, and I have to say that it was a good, tense thriller. Al Pacino's performance as the detective was good, but it's worth watching to see Robin Williams' performance as the killer. His performance was top notch. This is the dark side of Robin Williams unleashed. A great thriller for fans of the thriller genre.
