It was directed with energetic skill by Top Gun Tony Scott, but this breathtaking 1993 thriller (think of it as an adolescent crime fantasy on steroids) has Quentin Tarantino written all over it. True Romance is really part of a loose trilogy that includes Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, with a crackling Tarantino screenplay that rides a fine line between raucous comedy and violent excess. Christian Slater plays Clarence, the comic-book lover who meets a beguiling prostitute named Alabama (Patricia Arquette), confronts her vicious pimp (Gary Oldman), and embarks on a cross-country odyssey with $5 million worth of Mafia cocaine. Mayhem ensues, culminating in a favorite Tarantino climax--the "Mexican standoff"--in which a roomful of guys are pointing guns at each other, waiting to see who shoots first. Quentin Tarantino Fan (nowhere)
In 1987, Tarantino wrote his first screenplay and made his first feature film, My Best Friend's Birthday, a 71 minute film school, of sorts, for Tarantino. {Sadly, that movie was destroyed in a fire and only parts of it remain). Typical of a first feature made with a little bit of money, it wasn't very strong and definitely had problems all across the board. However, this would become the basis for True Romance, quite possibly the definition of a guy movie. Comic book store and film buff marries an attractive hooker who plays no games or tricks, who's nice, fun, and wouldn't cheat on you if she got the chance. it as unrealistic as Titanic? Probably. But unlike that ultra serious and annoying cinematic turd, True Romance is fun, full of energy, and is very much in the spirit of the romantic comicbooks with overwrought plots and titles. Like Pulp Fiction, there's little to no seriousness or nutrional value. But it comes to life in the spirit of the cheap and trashy, but utterly irreristable pulp fiction style books that you couldn't get enough of reading.
CHARACTERS AND ACTING 9/10
For an early Tarantino screenplay, the characters in this movie are extremely memorable, stating with perhaps the likeable and well done couple that comes off as natural and charismatic, instead of annoying like 999.999 percent of the couples portrayed in romance movies. Christian Slater shows a formidable modicum of acting ability, and the incredibly good looking and hot Patricia Arquette embodies the personality of this kind, strong, and incredibly attractive young woman. Sure, this may be every geek boy's dream, being that Slater is a largely friendless comic book store clerk and happens to be a big film geek with a passion for Kung-Fu movies. But it's not overdone and it's not that hard to take this movie's story with a sense of fun, unlike other romance movies that take themselves way too seriously.
However, what also makes this movie killer is the cast of supporting characters, which are argubaly some of the most memorable of Tarantino's characters (then again, all of his characters are memorable). Gary Oldman proves that he can play numerous roles as the hilarious and violent pimp Drexel Spivey. And I mean, damn, you do not even know it's Oldman. Brad Pitt once again proves that he's quite underrated in the face of all those idiots who hate him because of his public image, as a stoner, a stoner that was supposely so memorable that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg got inspiration from this character to make Pineapple Express. Dennis Hopper (who will soon probably leave this Earth as of this writing, RIP) and Christopher Walken pair up for a battle of wits regarding interrogation and races.
DIALOGUE 7/10
Being that this is Tarantino's first script, one might, and while I think there are some slow parts and uninteresting conversations, the dialogue is still really, really good, with great lines that stick out. It was obvious that Tarantino's talent as a dialogue writer was there, and when i mean underdeveloped a bit, that's not much of a problem when you're talking about a writer that blows pretty much everybody else out of the water regarding dialgoue. Not many writers can write dialogue like this, and for me, Tarantino is my favorite script writer ever. When he writes something, I listen, no matter what. There is not as many one liners or stings of strings of great dialogue clips as much as his other movies, but Tony Scott's high energy directing and the perfomances do help the dialogue work, and there are plenty of memorable and quotable dialogie

the only reason why we watched this was bc tarantino wrote it. the ending was horrible. it didn't even flow with the rest of the film. clarance should have died when the audience thought he was dead and alabama should have left with the briefcase. end of story. what's with the oh-so-happy ending? and a kid? really? how cheap. even more disappointing was the fact that tarantino's cameo was cut out. he's a true auteur and tony scott totally took a big crap on this. if you're a fan of tarantino, watch this, however, don't expect too much.

I can't believe all of the naive folks out there rating this movie low due to the unlikelihood of the main character going from comic book sales to mass murderer. This movie is outstanding and depicts a situation where true love gets Clarence in trouble with a low-life drug dealing pimp. The pimp and his bros try to kill Clarence for wanting his new wife out of prostitution so Clarence defends himself (shoots them). After taking her suitcase (he doesn't know it's the wrong case full of cocaine - Mob owned), he's now in trouble with the mob (hint - they are out for his blood too now). The mob wants their cocaine back, the FBI wants to get the mob, Clarence just wants to go about his new life with his bride, and there's a great ending. As a nearly 50 year old retired Air Force fighter pilot, I found "True Romance" to be one of my top 2 movies ever. If you believe you can still sleep with your doors unlocked today, then this movie is not for you.

A must buy! I just saw this movie (Dec. 2009). It is unbelievable. It IS conveying the ultimate romance! Sacrafice, courage, and the fight for whats good! Patricia Arquette is fabulous! Christian Slater is fabulous! Dennis Hopper is Fabulous! And, Gary Oldman is unbelievably convincing as "Dexter", Arquette's pimp for 4 days. Buy this movie. Watch it, then watch it again. I teared up. It is not violence for the sake of violence. It is reality man! Really. LOVED IT!
