I love this movie because it was filmed in my home town and they used my step-dad's store as one on the places to film. I got to know Johnny Whitaker and Will Geer and talked with Michael Douglas. Jodie Foster was only 9 but I enjoyed watching her work. This entire movie is special to my heart and it always will be.
A Memorable movie January 3, 2009 Wallowa SAM (Enterprise, OR, USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I first saw this animal adventure on TV, in the early 1970's. It might have been on "Walt Disney's Wonderful World if Color". It is a sensitive film and it made such an indelible impression that I have thought of it off and on for 35 years. All of the main characters are very likable, including the grandfather, the boy, played by Johnny Whitaker, the girl, played by Jodie Foster, and the young man, played by Michael Douglas. I am very much looking forward to getting it and seeing it again.
*Good Movie For Everyone!* May 17, 2008 Melissa Blubaugh (Maryland,United States) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a good movie for everyone in the family to enjoy.I loved seeing Michael Douglas and Jodie Foster at such a young age.I think you will enjoy this if you like the older, slower Disney movies.I enjoyed it.I think the older Disney movies were the best.
First rate family entertainment May 15, 2008 D. Nattrass (Sydney, Australia) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Whilst many critics do not rate this Disney offering as highly as some of the studio's other live action adventures (such as Davy Crockett, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and Swiss Family Robinson), it is hard to imagine anyone coming away from seeing this film feeling dissatisfied. The great majority of viewers, from seven to seventy, will enjoy the fine performances of Michael Douglas, Johnny Whittaker and a very young Jody Foster (as Samantha) in what is at times both a heart-warming tale and fast-moving adventure.
In spite of the age of the film, the DVD picture is of fine quality and will please Disney collectors. The disc itself is rather bare-bones with no extras (unfortunately). A recent cast interview with those mentioned would have been great.
All in all, well worth the small investment.
