Amazon.com This gentle comedy almost seems like something out of Hollywood's Golden Age, a movie that might have been made by a talented contract director, perhaps featuring Don Ameche and Claudette Colbert. But in fact it stars George Clooney as an investigative columnist for a New York newspaper and Michelle Pfeiffer as an architect. Both single parents, the two meet and bicker and develop a relationship over the course of a day while their young children play together. Michael Hoffman (Restoration) directs with a good sense of what's funny about harried caretakers and kids who do whatever they want to do. The story stretches out of shape a bit when Clooney's character has to rally to prove some point of corruption at City Hall; nobody involved seems quite up to making that subplot believable, but all that really matters about this very nice movie is the winning love story. --Tom Keogh

One Fine Mess February 9, 2010 Glenn Gallagher (Sacramento, CA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I had a visceral dislike for this movie - the characters portrayed are actually very hateful people, with no love to give to themselves, each other, or their children. I have no idea why this would pass as a romantic comedy. It was neither romantic nor amusing. The two main characters have been damaged by love. They are actually in a post-traumatic stress situation, where they don't know what the heck is wrong themselves. I would advise both the Clooney character and the Pfeiffer character to remain single until their children grow up and leave home, so the kids will not be damaged by divorce twice in their young lives. This couple is going to have a nasty break-up, it's inevitable.
The people in this film really are awful people that I have no interest in getting to know any better. It's possible that the screenplay was written by a recovering divorced man who thought for some reason his story was actually positive. I've seen war films with more humor and likability than this fine mess.
One fine day... November 12, 2009 MARCOLA (Somewhere in Time...) It would have been fine if George Looney hadn't have been in this movie.
I like Michelle Pfeiffer, she's a good versatile Actress.
I give this movie a 4 of 5 stars for my dislike of George Boy!!
If you're a sucker for golden hits, then this is for you October 20, 2009 Steve West (pelham, al United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
All music seemed clear and complete, and some songs that stick with you long after you've listened.

This is an enjoyable mix to listen to, even if you aren't familiar with the movie. It's got just the right combination of romantic and fun songs to make it a great addition to my ipod albums. I recommend it!
Absolutely the best soundtrack out there May 1, 2009 Larry This is the perfect compilation of music. The movie is great, but the soundtrack is outstanding. Perfect background music for a dinner party. Natalie Merchant's "One Fine Day" gives the song an entirely new feel. Ditto on Harry Connick Jr.'s take on Bacharach's "This Guy's In Love With You." And I particularly love Ella Fitzgerald's "Isn't It Romantic." And yes, it certainly is. One would think that Tina Arena's "Love's Funny That Way" would seem out of place with its country/pop feel, but it fits in nicely and compliments well those that surround it. This is one of those music compilations that you can listen to over and over and it never gets old.
