Not THE Attila, surely?... June 4, 2009 Shopper (USA) First of all, I did purposefully avoid watching the programme when it first came out: I could not be convinced that in today's world TV producers had budgets big enough to do justice to such a story. I was pleasantly shocked! I watched the "Making of..." featurette before watching the actual series and could not believe how much the makers were able to create with so little. There was only one moment in the entire series where the low budget revealed itself and made me flinch: the Roman market in the moonlight looked drawn with a pencil... Employing Lithuanian mounted police with their own horses and recent military recruits as the Roman Army was a stroke of genius! So, two thumbs up to the quality of the production...(I will say nothing of the quality of the supporting cast; just watch it for yourself and you will be impressed!). With that said, the historical inaccuracies were unbearable... Very quickly into the movie I decided to watch it strictly for its entertainment, rather then educational (which was none) value. This was more of a fairytale/love story, then an accurate reflection of the reality of those days.... Last, but not least: Butler as the real Attila would have been a bust (for one thing, Attila is described by historians as short and, as a pure blood Hun, indefinitely ugly by western standards; Butler is 6'2" and, shall we say, MUCH closer to the current standard of beauty). However, he made a charismatic hero of a fable...(though I could have done with less hair extensions and no eyeliner). I wish the wardrobe department would have re-thought Attila's undergarmets. One in particular, a diaper like loin cloth, was just too much. Every time the diaper made an appearance, my house would echo with hysterical laughter (my viewing companion and I thought there was enough fabric there to fully cloth at least two grown men). I am sure it was not the intention of the producers to turn Attila's romantic escapades into comedic entertainment, but... Anyway, entertaining story, as long as you do not look to learn anything historically factual from it, with a lead who is easy on the eyes... Money well spent...
Attila May 20, 2009 Dawn (NY) Gerard Butler is awesome in this movie as is Powers Booth and Tim Curry...I watch this movie over and over. It is a greart history lesson as well.
Attila February 28, 2009 Thomas Stone Overall a pretty good movie, though unfortunately the Romans were often stereotyped, and the realities of the a fifth century heavily Christianized Rome were almost entirely absent, in the interest of scandalizing their legendary illicit behaviors. The battle scenes seemed hampered by a lack of funding, and the Roman legions suffered from many anachronisms, probably noticed only by interested parties and/or classicists like myself. Irregardless, it was a very entertaining movie from start to finish, and I recommend it highly. It is interesting how often it is that the victims of imperial ambition are not soldiers, but the common people caught in the middle.

I bought this movie mainly because the reviews I read on Amazon, good God people, are you from Mars or someplace? Anyone who rated this movie a good picture has an incredible insane sense of good. This is possibly the worst picture ever made. Terrible directing, mostly pitiful acting, the graphic scenery is beyond exceptionaly poor. We are talking about Rome people, not Pittsburg, what was supposed to be one of the spectaculars of all time was made to look no greater than Hoboken. The warriors and soldiers that are supposed to be impressive, imposing war like hard men, look like a bunch of knock kneed old men from nursing homes. No wonder the U S of A is having such problems, A large percentage of our people do not know up from down.
Attila Review January 19, 2009 C. Egan This movie is a very sweeping story of Attila. I never realized Attila went to Rome, but I know now. I don't know how historically correct this movie is, but it is very entertaining. Lots of beautiful scenery, lots of action, good actors, lots of stuff to keep you entertained. I have watched it more than once. Powers Boothe as Roman General Flavius Aetius was a good thing, he was good. All in all, I would say a good movie.
