Product Description A 12 YEAR OLD STREET KID. A 3 TON KILLER WHALE. A FRIENDSHIP YOU COULD NEVER IMAGINE. AN ADVENTURE YOU'LL NEVER FORGET.
Amazon.com Some of us will never understand why this boy-and-his-whale tale became the hit family film of 1993 and one of the bestselling videos of all time. But it is easy to see how clever marketing and a tear-jerking story could touch the hearts of kids and parents the world over, especially because the endangered Orca whale named Willy is such a majestic creature. The story couldn't be more conventional--it's like Old Yeller and The Black Stallion with a big sea mammal--but as the boy who comes to Willy's aid against the whale's exploitative owner, young Jason James Richter gives an appealing performance with which children can readily identify. After two sequels and an animated television series, this popular film also had a happy real-life ending: Keiko the whale (who plays Willy) recovered from failing health and was gradually trained to survive outside of captivity. --Jeff Shannon

16 years, and this film still hasn't really dated July 2, 2009 Eric S. Kim (Southern California) Back when this was released on VHS, I always had the time to watch this film. Although I found some scenes that didn't involve the Orca a bit too tedious, now I find them all important for the overall meaning of Free Willy. This is a film about freedom, animal rights, and family. I may not believe everything about animal rights, but I still find this family film very touching. A few scenes still tend to drag a bit, and some of the dialogue is pretty cheesy, but those are just minor problems. This a great family film, and it shouldn't be overshadowed by most family films of today.
Heartwarming family flick abut a troubled boy and an orca whale June 7, 2009 Jennifer A. Everhart 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Here is a wonderful movie the entire family will love. A gang of whalers capture a valuable 12-year-old male orca whale (Keiko) for a marine exhibit and call him Willy. A homeless boy named Jessie (Jason James Richter) and his friends were snatching food from other people, but when the police hunt them down, Jessie and one of his friends hide in an aquarium and spray paint on the premesis. When the police catch up, they gave him a chance to make up for the grafiti incident by cleaning up the mess. They also gave him a foster home. During then, he befriends Randolph (August Shellenberg) and Willy. When greedy workers tried to kill Willy for the life insurance claim for $1,000,000, the group plan to release Willy into the wild. This was later followed by two sequels, with the second film probably being my favorite, but I am not so sure about the third. I would recommend this film franchise to anyone. You will enjoy it.
DECENT FAMILY FILM! IF YOU LIKE FLIPPER......... August 30, 2008 ! MR. KNOW IT ALL ;-b (TRI STATE AREA) Well, I can finally say I saw 'Free Willy'! Family friendly film with a simple story. It's easy to watch and it will keep the kids happy. I bought the triple feature with all 3 films for under $10.00, it's hard to go wrong for that price! The DVD set has very good transfers for all 3 films.
Why Only 4 Stars November 12, 2007 C. Bolton This movie was really good. One of my favorite movies. So why only give 4 stars? Well, here are the facts. They made the movie on freeing a captive orca right? Because they should be free. But in real life, they actually go out and capture Keiko to make the this movie. I think that is stupid. Good movie though.
Great Family Flim! June 12, 2007 Stephanie (New Mexico) This is a great adventure movie that children and adults alike would Love!
