This zany, eye-popping, knee-slapping landmark in combining animation with live-action ingeniously makes that uneasy combination itself (and the history of Hollywood) its subject. Who Framed Roger Rabbit is based on classic L.A. private-eye movies (and, specifically, Chinatown), with detective Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins) investigating a case involving adultery, blackmail, murder, and a fiendish plot to replace Los Angeles's once-famous Red Car public transportation system with the automobiles and freeways that would later make it the nation's smog capital. Of course, his sleuthing takes him back to the place he dreads: Toontown, the ghetto for cartoons that abuts Hollywood and that was the site of a tragic incident in Eddie's past. In addition to intermingling cartoon characters with live actors and locations, Roger Rabbit also brings together the greatest array of cartoon stars in the history of motion pictures, from a variety of studios (Disney, Warner Bros., MGM, Fleischer, Universal, and elsewhere): Betty Boop, Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Woody Woodpecker, Droopy Dog, and more! And, of course, there's Maroon Cartoon's greatest star, Roger Rabbit (voice by Charles Fleischer), who suspects his ultracurvaceous wife, Jessica Rabbit (voice by Kathleen Turner: "I'm not bad; I'm just drawn that way"), of infidelity. Directed by Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, Contact), not since the early Looney Tunes' "You Oughtta Be in Pictures" has there been anything like Roger Rabbit. --Jim Emerson

4 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Mix of Cartoon, Noir, and Mystery   May 22, 2009
    Untitled (nowhere)

This is another film, that, along with the Pixar movies, it victimized by Disney. This is NOT a Disney film. The only thing that makes it Disney is the cameo appearances. Forget what the stupid Toontown at Disneyland tells you about this film. Toontown is NOT a secret get-away for Mickey and his pals. Anyway, don't let Disney tell you that this movie is their kind of wretched film (especially considered what the released during these times). It's more brilliant and well-done than whatever Walt Disney Studios was vomiting up in the year of 1989.

The films direction is nailed from every aspect, and not that easy to classify. It's a maddening mix of cartoon and film-noir, sometimes coming off as neo-noir and cartoon-noir. Gah! The maddening mix that seems to be take on every aspect they can on mystery and film-noir films is mind boggling. Sometimes feel like a satire, sometimes simpy updated, no matter what, it's style is like nothing else. The combination of cartoon and real life animation must have been a pain in the arse to make, and the combination of the two are smooth and flawless. It makes you really feel cartoons and people live side by side.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit is also extremely entertaining. Oh sure, there is no drama, no social commentary, but I'll be damned if there isn't a film as entertaining as this one. As any good cartoons does, this one is also over the top, but, eh I don't know okay? This movie is Crazy good.

This is the first movie I ever had as a kid. I think the tap got stock in my VCR about 100 times. I can still say almost every word in the movie. I love this special edition DVD.

    The Bottom Line:

The special effects are nifty and I guess the Chinatown-esque plot is kinda fun, but the gimmick ran stale for me after the first half hour and I wanted a bit more to fall back on than Hoskins' growling and Christopher Lloyd's scenery chewing; I can see why everyone else loves it, but I was not especially enthused.
