Although she's never had a job in her life, Lee is hired by the mysterious lawyer, Mr. Grey. At first the work seems quite normal but soon, in between typing, filing and making coffee, Lee and Mr. Grey embark on a more personal relationship, crossing lines of conduct that would give any human resource director the vapors!

Format: DVD MOVIE
Amazon.com This kinky love story features a standout performance by Maggie Gyllenhaal, an offbeat young actress in her first starring role. Gyllenhaal plays Lee, a nervous girl who compulsively cuts herself, who gets a job as a secretary for Edward, an imperious lawyer (James Spader, an old hand at tales of perverse affection). Edward's reprimands for typos and spelling errors begin with mild humiliation, but as Lee responds to his orders--which are driven as much by his own anxieties and fears as any sense of order--the punishments escalate to spankings, shackles, and more. Secretary walks a fine line. It finds sly humor in these sadomasochistic doings without turning them into a gag, and it takes Lee and Edward's mutual desires seriously without getting self-righteous or pompous. Certainly not a movie for everyone, but some people may be unexpectedly stirred up by this smart and steamy tale of repressed passion. --Bret Fetzer

Intriguing movie..........gets & keeps your attention. June 20, 2009 L. Elliott (St. Louis, MO) James Spader was very good in this movie. The secret life that no one knows of....... Very interesting. Glad I bought it. Gives the Title of "Secretary" a whole new meaning.
Great movie June 8, 2009 Ben (Currently in Iraq) Definitely an interesting movie to watch, especially for someone that is considering something outside the box in their life. I've watched it several times and enjoyed every time.
Definitely one to enjoy June 3, 2009 Shanna (Carrollton, Texas) This is absolutely one of the best films that I own. There are those who have reviewed this and said it was slow and boring but obviously didn't look beneath the surface and see the true beauty of it.True BDSM is not about throwing down and having sex every two seconds, if you wanted that, then go watch some teen sex comedy crap. This was about the relationship between a submissive and a dominant. It takes time to build trust with a partner in a relationship such as this and I think that film portrayed it brilliantly. This is a film the definitely deserves 5 stars for accurately portraying a D/S relationship. It wasn't overly graphic or silly with over usage of whips and chains and such which is what I think alot of people were expecting out of this.In my opinion, this is what true love is.What is pain without the pleasure?Boring.
NOT FOR EVERYONE May 19, 2009 INTELLECTUAL HETEROSEXUAL (BALTIMORE, MD) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I WATCHED A MOVIE CALLED THE PIANO TEACHER A FEW YEARS AGO AND WAS REMINDED OF IT WHILE THIS UNFOLDED IN FRONT OF ME. AWFUL; JUST AWFUL. IF YOU DONT GET THE WHOLE B/D OR S/M THING...WHATEVER IN THE *ELL WAS GOING ON IN THESE MOVIES(which i do not and never will) I CANT IMAGINE ANYONE WANTING TO SIT THROUGH AWKWARD MATERIAL LIKE THIS THAT JUST ISNT EVERYONES CUP OF TEA. I WONT SPOIL IT FOR ANYONE. LETS JUST SAY IF ANY SORT OF GETTING HIT FOR SEXUAL PLEASURE BOTHERS YOU....SKIP THIS SHOW.
Great performances of an Atypical love story May 6, 2009 raeve (tulsa, ok) If you enjoyed Sex, Lies & Videotape and the like, give Secretary a go. Even love finds a way with these two, messed up souls portrayed by Gyllenhaal and Spader. The subtleties of the performances are what get to me and under my skin, in a good way! The bond in which this unlikely pair forms is endearing and inspiring. The S&M angle, to me, is a lighthearted one, not necessarily to be taken seriously as it is more of a tool used to connect these two fragile souls. An honest reflection of overcoming one's demons.
